Many of the respondents here, especially the connoisseurs who favor the "music" of Metallica - sorry, "Tallica" - seem to equate musical significance with the number of Grammies won. There is no need to comment further on that - or the very bizarre comment on "ear rape." I would guess that most of the "Tallica" fans who have weighted in here were/are not old enough to remember th great age of heavy metal - it was not the 80s or 90s - its bands and their music.
The greatest of these were not concerned with image, greed, litigiousness, or the "business" of music. Rather their music was visceral, not studied, loud, but not coerced, and real, not imagined. They wanted to rock and didn't give a crap about tomorrow, let alone their royalties.
Placed such a context, Metallica is an anti-metal band - the equivalent of Journey in its genre. Every age wants to believe its music is the best. Too bad it isn't so.
