"Was it with the Chili Peppers (in 2000)?" However long was too long considering the reaction of the crowd that pogoed and pumped fists through high energy performances of "Breakout" and "Learn to Fly." Friday's show was actually the first time in over four years that Grohl's group played Charlotte.

It was also the band's first non-festival headlining gig in Charlotte in its 12-year history. At Grohl's invitation, Detroit's Hifi Handgrenades (featuring drummer Ryan Vanderberghe, formerly of the Suicide Machines) opened the show with blistering 3-minute punky, rock songs, including a cover of North Carolina indie legend Superchunk's "Detroit Has a Skyline." Grohl and the other Foo Fighters emerged shortly after that, flanked by four extra touring members on keys, percussion, cello and fiddle, and guitar.

The third guitar spot was held by former Germs member Pat Smear, who also toured with Nirvana .
