Where most reggae singers favor a sedate, trancelike delivery, Hibbert, now in his early 60s, grew up singing in Kingston churches, and his style has always tended toward the arm-waving passion of a gospel choirboy. Behind him, the Maytals looked less like dreadlocked rastas and more like seasoned Motowners, with baseball caps, thick glasses, modest polo shirts. They moved with the nonchalance of old pros.
Most of the night was filled with bluesy harmonicas and soaring rock guitar solos. There wasn't much "praise Jah" sermonizing. This seemed to suit the crowd just fine.
