The Commodores times did not sound impressive but this course seems like it s about a minute and 15 seconds slower than the average course, said Perry Central Coach Jason Barnett. I think it s a little long. Perry Central sophomore Rachael Rayford repeated as conference champion in the girls race, but Perry Central finished second to Crawford County.

Rayford won in 21:46 despite making a wrong turn that probably added 20 seconds to her time, said Barnett. Audra Gehlhausen, seventh in 23:15, and Amy Schwartz, 10th in 23:45, also made all-conference. Lavina Schwartz was 12th in 24:03 and Robbi Thomas 13th in 24:05 to complete the Commodores scoring.

We had a couple of girls--Amy and Lavina--kind of going through the flu, said Barnett. I think it really slowed Lavina--she s usually our No. 2 runner.

Abby Preher, 17th in 26:09, and Kendall Troesch, 19th in 26:57, also finished for the Commodores. Perry Central will compete in the Jasper sectional Tuesday. The Commodores are the defending champions in the boys race and I think it ll be definitely be between us and Tell City for the title this year, said Barnett.

Perry Central hopes to be one of the five girls teams qualifying for the regional, and if we run like we did at Bedford, we d have a chance to win (the sectional), said Barnett. Boys team scores: Perry Central 15, Orleans 63, Paoli 70, Mitchell 107, West Washington 139, Crawford County 143. Girls team scores: Crawford County 20, Perry Central 43, Paoli 95.

Mitchell and West Washington had incomplete teams.
