Police said he defied an order from five gunmen who raided his house to surrender money and mobile phones he had when they beat him on Saturday morning. The thugs, it is said, gained entry into the house through the main door that had been left open by the victim s relatives. The relatives went for a party and left the door open.

They stole Sh100,000 and mobile phones, said Kilimani OCPD, Mr Herbert Khaemba. Khaemba said the incident occurred at about 4am. He added that Julian was with two other engineers - one from New Zealand and an Australian.

They were in Kenya to help set up a US$2.5 million Olivado processing plant, Gary Hannam, chairman of New Zealand avocado oil company, Olivado, said. The men climbed up to the second floor balcony.

Then they broke the door and came into the engineers bedroom, tied up two of them and asked for money. Then they found Julian and I understand he said he didn t have any money, then they hit him on the head, said Hannam, adding Nathan died after being struck with a blunt object. He said the men took around Sh100,000 in cash, several laptops and mobile phones.

This shall not stop us because Julian would have wanted us to continue with our work to benefit thousands of people, Hannam said. Separately, a loader at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport died when a conveyor belt crushed him on Sunday night. The man was loading luggage onto a plane when he accidentally slipped onto the conveyor belt that killed him on the spot.
