Open top cruising is often about relaxed driving up and down Camps Bay's boulevard which is why Audi's V8-powered RS 4 Cabriolet is a bit of a surprise.
Priced at R715 000, the RS 4 Cabriolet offers a claimed 309kW from its 4.2-litre FSI engine.
It can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 4,9 seconds, 0-200km/h in 17,5 seconds until reaching its top speed limited to 250km/h.
As with the RS 4 sedan, the Cabriolet offers Audis new generation of quattro drive with a 40:60 torque split between the front and the rear axles. The hydraulically actuated Dynamic Ride Control (DRC) is also included while a close-ratio, six-speed manual gearbox transfers the power to the road.
Visually, the RS 4 Cabriolet is clearly a member of the RS family: the flared wheel arches, wider track and RS specific bumpers make it pretty obvious.
But the retractable roof is really what it's all about. Press a button and in 21 seconds, the triple-lined acoustic fabric top folds away and, as with other Audi A4 Cabriolet models, the fully electronic top of the RS 4 can be raised or lowered at speed up to 30km/h.
The interior offers room for four adults. As standard, sports front seats are fitted for better rear passenger legroom but, as an option, you can get the RS bucket seats fitted to the sedan.
Standard equipment includes electrically operated front seats, full leather upholstery, 18-inch wheels and tyres, cruise control, electrically adjustable windows and side mirrors, rain and light sensor, bi-Xenon headlights and dual zone climate control air-conditioning.
Passenger safety is courtesy of front and side airbags (fitted as standard), while in a roll-over situation two steel bars extend behind the rear seats within milliseconds.
The latest generation ESP 8 and cross-drilled and inner ventilated brakes with ABS assistance are also part of the RS 4 Cabriolets safety arsenal.
Optional equipment on the RS 4 includes 19-inch wheels and tyres, DVD-based navigation and special RS-specific colour schemes for the exterior.
