San Marcos High s volleyball team has its back against the wall. Now, it ll have to spend the rest of district play digging out of a hole. At 1-4 in district 25-5A, the Lady Rattlers are beginning to enter must-win territory.

But, then again, San Marcos could have circled this Tuesday s date as a must-win months before the season. Tonight the Lady Rattlers hit the road to face Austin-Akins, another 1-4 squad. To have any shot at a playoff spot, San Marcos must take care of business against Bastrop and Akins, the usual 25-5A bottom dwellers.

Then the Lady Rattlers have to do battle with Seguin and Anderson for the final playoff berth behind Westlake, Austin High and Bowie. San Marcos has dropped four straight district contests, so it ll have to snap a streak to get things going against Akins. A win over Akins would set up a critical Friday night match against Anderson, again on the road.

If San Marcos can pick up a pair of wins this week, the rest of 2007 is going to look a lot brighter. The Lady Rattlers are still searching for a consistent threat up front to compliment Jillian Wolpman. Halea Williams has looked great at times, but she s going to need help to create a more formidable front line.

Westlake took advantage of the Lady Rattlers lack of depth, going into attack mode whenever Wolpman was hung up on the back line stint of her rotation. The Lady Rattlers will start trying to claw their way back into the district race tonight at 7:30 p.m.

against the Lady Eagles. Hays hits the road Hays High is headed to 2-4 Del Valle tonight to wrap up the first half of district play just days after the Lady Rebels found out they have a dogfight on their hands. The Lady Rebels were 4-1 going into last Friday s game with Steele High and Hays seemed ready to begin locking up third place in District 26-4A behind New Braunfels Canyon and New Braunfels.

Then Steele shocked the Lady Rebels with a five-game win behind sophomore McKenzie Adams 24-kill, 5.5 block effort. Now Steele and Hays are deadlocked in third place, set to battle it out for the final playoff spot.

To make it a battle though, Hays has to keep taking care of business, starting with tonight s contest with Del Valle and continuing Friday on the road against Lockhart. Other action..

. Wimberley will try and continue its march through 25-3A tonight on the road against Llano. The Lady Texans have played extremely well of late.

The Llano match is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start.

Wimberley steps out of district play Friday to take on San Antonio-Warren. Lehman is still searching for its first district victory of 2007. Tonight the Lady Lobos host Steele High.
