THE wacky, wired, weird and wonderful descended on Stradbally over the weekend when tens of thousands thronged to the Electric Picnic. Joe Barrett enlisted two of his children, Diarmaid (12) and Rуisнn (10), as cub reporters for the weekend. Diarmaid wasn’t too impressed with the noise.
“It nearly deafened me. Thumping music coming from all over the place. Then there were all the lads piddling up against the fences.
They were queueing up to get drink and queuing up to get rid of it. There should have had more toilets. I saw toilet rolls flying over the heads of people when Bjork was playing on stage,” said Diarmuid.
“There were some scary people there too. I saw a man dressed up as a green pixie. He looked weird.
We went into a rubber church and I was told I had to be a witness to two South African people getting married. “Then we went into a musty smelly tent that had real old records playing on a record player. It was supposed to be going back in time.
They were battered up couches all around the side of it. “The cinema was great. People were lying on the ground looking at the movie.
The dancing nuns were brilliant too. The comedy tent was a bit of craic.” For Diarmuid ‘Magic Numbers’ were the best band followed by ‘Bjork’.
“We saw them when we were on the VIP stand. We could see every thing from there. They should have had M and M on instead of some of the other crap bands that were playing.
“The Playstation 3 dome was excellent. I got to test out a few of the new games. From Roisin’s point of view the downside of the Picnic was “all the people who were drunk”.
“The Picnic was weird. It was very unusual, but fun” said Roisin. “The best part was the Doppelganger tent.
I made a clay mould of a tortoise and Joe was supposed to pick it up on Sunday. He forget to. It’s probably on somebody’s sideboard now.
“The other best thing was the music and all the food. I hadn’t got time to get around to everything. There were too many bands playing all at once.
We were there for six hours and we weren’t able to get to see everything. “The Picnic wasn’t the way I thought it might be. There was more at it than I thought there might be.
The worst thing was seeing all the drunken people falling around. Now I know why they say people are p***ed drunk. The other worst thing was when I had to go home.
I’m definitely going next year, if Joe takes me,” said Roisin.
