(RTTNews) - Friday, Schering-Plough Corp. ( | | | ), a drug major, revealed further details of its broad-spectrum antibiotic Avelox - moxifloxacin HCl drug's efficacy in monotherapy treatment of complicated abdominal infections. The drug is indicated to treat complications from disease, trauma or surgery where bacteria spread to adjacent tissues from the gastrointestinal tract.

The Kenilworth, New Jersey based company's Avelox is indicated in the treatment of polymicrobial complicated intra-abdominal infections as well as mixed aerobic and anaerobic bacteria and the most common type of bacteria, including E. coli and B fragilis. Dr.

Robert Spiegel, Chief Medical Officer and Senior Vice President, Schering-Plough Research Institute, said, "Complicated intra-abdominal infections often involve several different kinds of bacteria and require broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy for effective treatment. The data presented at ICAAC further underscore the efficacy of once-daily Avelox monotherapy in treating these infections." The Avelox study was based on randomized, open-label, multi-center study to evaluate the efficacy and safety of moxifloxacin, compared to combination therapy, in the treatment of complicated intra-abdominal infections.

The study included 595 subjects at 58 centers worldwide, with 584 subjects on intent-to-treat analysis, split into groups of 289 on moxifloxacin and 295 in the control group. Subjects were administered either intravenous followed by oral moxifloxacin of 400 mg, once daily or a sequential therapy with intravenous ceftriaxone of 2 g daily and metronidazole 0.5 g three times daily, followed by oral dosing of amoxicillin/clavulanate of 625 mg three times daily for 14 days.

A switch to oral moxifloxacin 400 mg, once daily or amoxicillin/clavulanate 625 mg, three times daily was allowed per protocol after the third day of treatment for the two groups, respectively. The study showed moxifloxacin monotherapy to be as effective as the combination therapy in treating patients with complicated intra-abdominal infections. Clinical cure rates indicated 80.

9% in the group receiving moxifloxacin and 82.3% in the group receiving the combination therapy regimen. Other parameters including duration of therapy, length of post-operative hospital stay and mortality rates were comparable for the two groups.

Both therapies were well tolerated with 19% in the moxifloxacin alone group and 12.5% in the comparator arm evidenced at least one drug-related adverse event. SGP is gaining $0.
