m. (Contributed) Norwood Cheek is known as the dean of Super 8mm movies, with his Flicker Film Festival in Los Angeles, and events like Attack of the 50ft Reels, which celebrate the art of do-it-yourself filmmaking with old school home movie equipment. But the North Carolina native got his start making music videos at university in Chapel Hill, working with area band Superchunk, which led to a string of assignments for other indie acts like Tsunami, Velocity Girl, Archers of Loaf and Squirrel Nut Zippers.

It s just such a fun and quick way of experimenting with a look or a style, plus I was really into the music scene, says Cheek, who s hosting the 10 X 10 music video program this week at the Atlantic Film Festival. I was in a band at the time, and knew everybody in every band in Chapel Hill. The scene was really thriving; it was when they were trying to find the next Seattle.

Having had its own next Seattle phase in the early 90s, Halifax is a perfect place for Cheek to come and co-ordinate 10 X 10, with Atlantic filmmakers teamed up with local bands to create a pile of music videos in just a few short days. Screenings are on Friday night at the Seahorse Tavern at 8 p.m.

, followed by performances by Timothy Chiasson, Mark Bragg, the Divorcees and MIR. It became a really great way to experiment with filmmaking styles, and be able to do things you d never have the budget for on your own, says Cheek of the program. 10 X 10 was originally just 10 people doing short films in one day, but talking to Gregor Ash and some of the other people at the film fest, they were really interested in supporting more music stuff, and they knew I d done some videos, and it seemed like the perfect combination.

Cheek has been a guest of the Atlantic Film Festival before, and by osmosis has become a fan of a number of local acts. He has been working with indie faves Dog Day on a music clip, while other acts getting the video treatment this week include Hey Rosetta!, Steven Bowers, Caledonia, Down With the Butterfly and Jessica Rhaye.

That s why I was doubly excited about doing this event in Halifax, because I ve become familiar with the music scene through people like my friends (animator) Heather Harkins and Francesca Tallone, who s a DJ at CKDU, who introduced me to a lot of bands, he says. Halifax has a small town college vibe like Chapel Hill, and I d been a fan of the music scene for a couple of years, so I knew there were a lot of great bands. That s a huge part of it, because if there aren t any good bands, it d be hard to make good videos.
