Cole and Carey - can you spot the family resemblance? It was revealed singer Mariah Carey is related to Chelsea star Ashley Cole. The Rhythm and Blues diva, 37, was tracing her family tree because she was convinced she has the same ancestors as legendary crooner Nat 'King' Cole.
But Carey was shocked to discover she is a relative of England defender, Ashley, instead, reported the Daily Star. Her findings showed that her grandmother came from the same area of America's Deep South as Ashley's ancestors. 'It's fascinating,' said Carey, who boasts five Grammy Awards to her name.
'My grandmother was a Cole before she married and it turns out she comes from the same area of Alabama as his (Ashley's) ancestors.' But the singer is still determined to find some kind of relation to the jazz legend Nat 'King' Cole. She added: 'We are still looking into it to see if we're also related to Nat King Cole.
'I'm such a huge fan of his. That would be wonderful and would explain so much.' The Blues' full-back Cole is, of course, no stranger to pop stars.
The 26-year-old is married to Cheryl Tweedy, a member of the British chart-topping act Girls Aloud. EXCITED Nevertheless, Cole is understandably excited that he is a relative of Carey. Said his pal: 'Ashley is chuffed to bits to hear that they're related.
'He's always been a big fan of Mariah and grew up listening to jazz legends like Nat King Cole.' A family duet between Carey and Tweedy may be a tantalising prospect in the near future. But whether the two pop divas can share the same stage remains to be seen.
