Monday night at the Vancouver Smashing Pumpkins concert at the PNE Forum a 20-year old fan was removed unconscious from the venue where he’d been part of, according to police reports, “a mosh pit or crowd-surfing incident.” Treated by paramedics and then taken to the St. Paul’s Hospital, he was subsequently pronounced dead.

Police are attributing the death to an “out of control mosh pit” and haven’t indicated there’s any suspicion of foul play. About 3,800 people attended the concert, and the PNE reportedly dissuades crowd surfing via a three-strike policy—admittedly not one easy to enforce. "It wasn't what we would call a heavy moshing or crowd-surfing group but there certainly was some and quite frankly you cannot prevent it.

We do our very best to discourage it though," said the spokesperson. In 1996 a fan died from crushing in another mosh pit incident at a Pumpkins concert in Dublin.
