The remote Highland village of Durness is planning a major festival in memory of John Lennon.

The former Beatle visited the Scottish location with family in his youth and later returned with wife Yoko Ono and his children.

Locals are now organising a three-day event for September and promise it will be one of the "most extraordinary" festivals the country has ever seen, featuring music, poetry, films and a dance in a cave.

It will hold the world premiere of the Royal Academy of Music's Beatles Prom and include performances from band Nizlopi and poets Carol Ann Duffy and Michael Horovitz.

Lennon family members will speak about the legend and there will be screenings of the Beatles' films.

Lennon spent five summers at Durness, a village of 350 people, and its landscape is credited with inspiring 'In My Life'.
