Over the weekend at the Cannes Film Festival, U2 unveiled an early version of a groundbreaking new concert film, titled U23D. The film, which is shown in 3-D, was shot with 18 cameras on U2's 2006 tour of South America. U23D is expected to be released theatrically later this year.

The filmmakers were on hand at Cannes, and told a press conference, "It's about the performance of the band and their relationship with each other on stage and with their audience. We wanted to show how each song has an arc and the setlist has an arc and the movie shows this."
Before the film, moviegoers were surprised on the red carpet with a two song performance by U2 themselves.

The band played "Vertigo" and "Where The Streets Have No Name," before a nine-song version of U23D was screened. U2 manager Paul McGuinness told U2.com that, "Everyone sang along, it was just like being at a show.

"
It is still unknown how U23D will be shown and distributed, as it can only be shown in theaters that are equipped for 3-D movies. The Los Angeles Times reports that there are about 700 screens in the U.S.

that have the technology necessary for the film. The paper also notes that since the film was made to only be seen in 3-D, traditional outlets such as DVD and cable showings of the film are off the table.
