Three cheers for the United States, keeping freedom-hating, free-health-care-receiving heathens like out of our beautiful land.
The Furs had scheduled in the States this month-- including one in Rhode Island tonight-- and all of those are now canceled after the duo was denied entry into the country (suspected of smuggling pelts, no doubt).
A May 28 show at Montreal s Club Lambi will go on as scheduled (being in Canada and all).

Presuming they can get whatever mess they re in settled-- or sneak across the border (do it, guys!)-- June gigs in L.A.

and July gigs in Chicago ( ) will also still occur as planned.
Nothing like a good border patrol smackdown to put a damper on this otherwise momentous day, which marks the release of Handsome Furs debut, .
The D don t stand for dilettante, people.

Perhaps a wee bit overeager to distance himself from the decadent world of rock music-- not to mention lend some cred to his lofty -- posted his on the s webpage this morning.
In the post, titled (by a snide editor and not Carlos, we hope to God) Forget rock: I only listen to symphony orchestras , Carlos makes a case for his music of choice-- not the rock, as the casual listener might suspect, but the gorgeous and inexhaustible power of strings, winds, brass, and percussion.
Carlos explains his on-off relationship with these sounds most often grouped as Classical : he turned to it as an opposite extreme to rock as a teenager, then relapsed some as Interpol took off and he became ready to start socializing like a normal human being again.

Now Carlos and symphonic sounds are very much in love once more, monogamously.
I ve immersed myself totally in this genre of music to the exclusion of all others, writes Carlos. While it s not clear whether or how soon we can expect future Carlos D blog entries, you can check out the first one in its entirety .

Also, no word yet on Gaius the Italian greyhound s feelings toward classical music.
As Carlos concludes, If I want to hear the sound of guitar and drums, these days I simply play a show with my band.
And indeed, having already endeavored to bring orchestra-appropriate attire to beer-soaked rock stages around the globe, this classical music cognoscente will deign to don the low-ly bass at a whole flaming mass of Interpol in the coming months.

Our Love to Admire, , lands July 10. have added three U.S.

dates to their spring and summer tour, and yet, all of them are in San Francisco. Other than their appearances at the Virgin, Live Earth, and Osheaga festivals, the residencies in Asheville and San Francisco remain the only dates at which North American residents can see the band live. Bummer, especially considering that the from (out July 10) is actually kind of good.

Europeans will have more than their fair share of Zeitgeist-y goodness on the Pumpkins tour, which kicks off tonight in Paris.
UPDATE: For the Paris show, the Pumpkins live lineup consisted of bassist Ginger Reyes (The Halo Friendlies), guitarist Jeff Schroeder (The Lassie Foundation), and keyboardist Lisa Harriton. So yeah, pretty much what s been rumored for ages now.

No word yet whether these folks contribute at all to Zeitgeist. Sufjan, Greg Saunier Make Noise With David Garland
Plus: Diane Cluck, Viking Moses!, Mira Romantschuk of Mi and L'au Over his many years as a respected NYC songwriter and radio host of s Spinning on Air and Evening Music , s crossed paths with all sorts of similarly tuneful folks.

helps round out the nest on Bird , and, elsewhere, sings on Diorama .
On his , Garland calls Noise both my most personal and most accessible album. Catch him at Brooklyn s Union Hall on the night of the album s release (July 24 in case you missed it).

Continuing their of gigging out occasionally on the weekends, nine-to-five Jersey boys have lined up a helping of day-off dates in the coming sun-soaked months.
Charles, Kevin, Greg, and Jerry will send the suits to the dry-cleaners and don that rock star regalia for five shows in June and July-- including an appearance at Chicago s BAM! Belmont Arts Music Festival June 24 alongside Bob Mould and the Heartless Bastards, and a stint at Ottawa s Capital Idea!

Festival. They even live on the edge a little, shrugging off work-week fatigue to play a Friday night show in Denton, Texas in July. Hilarity will ensue when the boss shows up, gets totally shit-faced, and proceeds to make out with Kevin Whelan s battered bass.

The Wrens will be joined on two Texas dates by labelmates (led by Pitchfork s own Matt LeMay), while recent Arts Crafts signing provide support for one engagement.
No news yet on the follow-up to , but hopefully some progress will be made next time these working class heroes vacation days line up. Forget the whole vs.

thing-- everybody won this past weekend at latest and most ambitious soir e e to date. gathered a dream bill culled from across the musical landscape, including seasoned vets (Patti Smith, Echo the Bunnymen), indie hallmarks (Yo La Tengo, Built to Spill, Wilco, Modest Mouse, Mogwai), live favorites (Les Savy Fav, the Go! Team, Band of Horses) and even a few gems you re not likely to see on many other festival bills (Current 93, Ghost, Shellac).

The result? All killer, no filler.
Photos of the aforementioned lie ahead, plus Slint, Grizzly Bear, the Books, the Notwist, Daniel Johnston, Isis, Do Make Say Think, Cornelius, Clinic, Sparklehorse, Okkervil River, Architecture in Helsinki, Brightblack Morning Light, Annuals, the Apples in Stereo, Trans Am, Akron/Family, Why?

Having squelched dates by bands like and recently, they ve gotten to electro songstress , too, who s been forced to shuck her set at this weekend s in Washington State. According to a statement posted on the Sasquatch site, unexpected delays in the processing and issuance of M.I.

If you remember, this has happened to M.I.A.

Uh , a single out July 2 in the UK on , is the first new gasp we ve heard from breathless electronic-pop up-and-comers since the release of last year. Uh , we re told, is about space and time, the alphabet, and girls, which, when spoken aloud, we assume was said by a Dorito-stained mouth, followed by the word dude and some giggling. Uh is backed with One Trick Pony , which F M are so totally not.

The Uh single will be available for download and in the 7 vinyl format. CDs are, like, sooo big-beat era.
Of course, Fujiya Miyagi will unpack their many tricks this summer, including a stop at the , popping off July 14 along with everybody you ve ever wanted to see live but didn t feel like paying more than $50 for.

Well, maybe you d pay more, but we won t make you.

You can take away their lives, but you'll never take away their skinny jeans Ever wanted to get intimate with four Scotsmen at once?

No? If I told you those four Scotsmen were none other than the of , might that sweeten the deal? Thought it might.

Mr. Kapranos, the best-named drummer in rock (Paul Thomson), and those other dudes will rock a couple 600-ticket shows at Glasgow s Grand Ole Opry in early June: your only chances to peek under their proverbial kilts until they swing over to the commons for a set at . One presumes they ll bust out some of the new tracks hinted at on the band s MySpace blog, including A New Thrill and An English Goodbye.

Of course, all that should change with the announcement of a date or two in New York City, which have been hinted at in a recent MySpace post. Trying to wrench two stories out of us, aren t you, boys? Eh, you win.

In other Franz news, Paul Thomson (so close!) is DJing a mess of dates this weekend, including an hour on BBC radio s show Friday night. He ll also hit up Manchester, England s Joshua Brooks nightclub, and the May 27, and.
