He sounds just like Kanye. That rsquo;ll be the common response amongst listeners of Consequence rsquo;s debut studio album Don rsquo;t Quit Your Day Job.

And honestly, he does. Consequence is arguably more lyrical, but he lacks the charisma of the Louis Vuitton Don (don rsquo;t we all?).

Consequence has been around longer, however. He was heavily featured on A Tribe Called Quest rsquo;s 1996 album Beats, Rhymes and Life. He has been also featured on numerous Kanye West tracks from Gone to Spaceship.

Don rsquo;t Quit Your Day Job is the rapper rsquo;s first solo effort, and the title matches the prevailing theme of the album. Throughout the album, he addresses the conflicts with following his dream of becoming a big-time rapper, and having to live in the real world. In ldquo;Job Song, rdquo; Consequence spits the mantra ldquo;this just ain rsquo;t where I rsquo;m supposed to be.

rdquo; Most people can relate to the idea something standing between them and their dreams. ldquo; How I get stuck in this dead end job if I could rap/but of course my bill collectors ain rsquo;t trying to hear that. rdquo; Nearly everybody has worked somewhere they hated.

The album provides a refreshing view of a rapper who wasn rsquo;t selling unbelievable amounts of drugs to survive. Consequence isn rsquo;t what the stereotypical rapper, sadly, is. He is referred to as Dex ndash; short for his given name Dexter ndash; throughout the album.

He spits about himself as Dex and a reality most can relate to.
On ldquo;Uncle Raheim, rdquo; Consequence introduces us to that family member we wouldn rsquo;t have anything to do with if he wasn rsquo;t family. ldquo; This sorta uncle is like Rich Porter rsquo;s uncle/so he be in my shoe box messin rsquo; with my hustle.

rdquo; The song introduces us to Dex rsquo;s uncle who has returned home from prison after 10 years. The two butt heads, until Dex reports his uncle to his patrol officer.
The album is lacking, however.

The production is nothing special. Lupe Fiasco fans will recognize ldquo;Pretty Little Sexy Mama, rdquo; as it has the same beat as ldquo;Ghetto Story. rdquo; The best songs, production-wise, are produced by the aforementioned West.

Two of them, ldquo; The Good, the Bad, The Ugly rdquo; and ldquo;Grammy Family, rdquo; are old tracks. While new listeners may have never heard them, Consequence fans ndash; those who would have been checking for the album ndash; have heard them long ago.
Despite its shortcomings, the album is probably the first quality pick-up of the year for hip-hop fans.

Consequence would be wise to ignore his advice and quit his day job. He rsquo;s shown potential and can hopefully show growth.
