Nov 01, Colombo: The Sri Lanka government is planning to implement a comprehensive Mine Action Programme to make the country mine free by the end of the year 2008. The programme is being managed by the Ministry of Nation Building and Infrastructure. More than twelve countries, including Japan, are supporting the Mine Action Programme.
The Government of Japan has agreed to provide US$ 11.5 million for the project. The agreement for this was signed at the Ministry on September 20.
Funds totaling US$ 696,074 received by the Halo Trust and US$ 711,136 received by the Danish De-mining Group are also being utilized for ongoing de-mining activities in the Jaffna District.
