VIENNA Japanese conductor Seiji Ozawa, who serves as music director of Vienna's State Opera, on Sunday returned to the podium with Richard Wagner's "Flying Dutchman" after being hospitalized in January last year for poor health and canceling his concert commitments in the Austrian capital. Ozawa, 71, was applauded loudly when he returned to the stage with performers at the end of the production, which lasted over two hours without an intermission.
On Feb. 1 last year, Ozawa cancelled all his commitments as music director of the opera house after facing a series of medical problems such as shingles and inflammation of the cornea.
