'Red Rock Rondo' will close Excellence in the Community Series
An all-star ensemble composed of the band blue haiku (Phillip Bimstein, Harold Carr, Flavia Cerviño-Wood and Charlotte Bell) plus Kate MacLeod and Hal Cannon will bring this year's Excellence in the Community Series to a close with a performance of "Red Rock Rondo" on Saturday at Vieve Gore Concert Hall at Westminster College, 1250 E. 1700 South, Salt Lake City. Tickets are 12 at 801-832-2458 or at Hires Big H restaurants.
"Red Rock Rondo" is a song cycle composed by former Springdale mayor Bimstein that celebrates the history and life of Zion National Park and surrounding communities. "Rocks on Fire," for example, honors the men who built the Zion Tunnel, while "Hay-colored Leaves" captures one woman's memories of the mulberry trees that are becoming scarce in Springdale. It was written for an assortment of instruments, including guitars, violins, mandolins, mandocello, banjo, harmonica, button accordion, oboe, English horn, upright bass and vocals.
Folk, pop and classical styles all play a role. "Red Rock Rondo" was performed at the recent rededication ceremony for Zion National Park's historic Nature Center, attended by first lady Laura Bush.
