A legion of A-listers descended on the Metropolitan Museum of Art last night as the glamorous Costume Institute kicked off its annual exhibit with an exclusive, star-studded dinner and a performance by Oscar-winner Jennifer Hudson.
Cate Blanchett and Balenciaga creative director Nicolas Ghesquiere co-chaired the event, which drew Scarlett Johansson (in Stella McCartney), Renee Zellweger (in Carolina Herrera), Kate Bosworth (in Prada), Salma Hayek (in Balenciaga), Lucy Liu (in Zac Posen) and Eva Mendes, who arrived arm in arm with Michael Kors.
The fashion frenzy on Fifth Ave.

had traffic backed up for blocks as old pals Cameron Diaz (in Dior) and Liv Tyler (in Calvin Klein) did a girly jump for joy on the red carpet. Jennifer Lopez, wearing a Marchesa gown, arrived with husband Marc Anthony. Gisele Bundchen, the new face of Yves Saint Laurent, joined that design house's posse, which included Julianne Moore and Bundchen's boyfriend Tom Brady.

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen - one in black, one in white - teetered up the museum's grand staircase, while Lindsay Lohan brought up the posh parade's rear, scampering in 45 minutes late.
The Hollywood heavyweights were among the first to sneak a peek at the exhibit, dedicated to Paul Poiret, the French designer who famously called himself the "King of Fashion."
Poiret is best known as the man who, in the early 20th century, loosened constrictive corsets and pioneered the art of fabric draping as a means of creating a dress.

The exhibit opens tomorrow.
