LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Hotel heiress Paris Hilton is about to have a temporary new home -- a jail cell. A judge in Los Angeles has sentenced Hilton to 45 days in jail for violating her probation in connection with an alcohol-related driving incident.
Hilton, known internationally because of her partying, must go to jail on June fifth.
SHe sobbed when she heard the verdict. "To sentence Paris Hilton to 45 days in jail to me was uncalled for, inappropriate and bordered on the ludicrous," said Howard Weitzman, Hilton s attorney. "I think she was singled out because of who she is.
"
Prosecutors said Hilton showed disregard for vehicle laws and conditions for her probation. She was first arrested in Hollywood last September for drivnig under the influence. In January, she pleaded "no contest" to reckless driving and the judge sentenced her to three years of probation and ordered her to go to an alcohol education program.
Later that month, police pulled her over for driving with a suspended license. Hilton signed a document acknowledging she wasnt supposed to drive, but after talking to her publicist, she testified she was told she could drive for work-related purposes.
Then, in February, she was stopped again for speeding and driving without headlights.
She hasn t driven since.
Prosecutors asked Hilton if she s taking all this seriously. She responded yes.
They say they approached the case the same as anyone else who s violated court orders.
Hilton s attorneys say they will appeal the ruling.
Going behind bars is apparently her only option.
A judge has ordered that Hilton won t be allowed any work release, furloughs, use of an alternative jail and or electronic monitoring in lieu of jail.
