May 09, Reverend Horton Heat, Murder by Death, at New City Compound, Edmonton May 10, Teenage Head, The Mark Birtles Project, Michael Rault and the MIxed Signals, at The Starlite Room, Edmonton May 11, Matthew Barber, Co-Pilots, The Firm Handshake, at Broken City, Calgary May 11, Peter Bjorn and John, at MacEwan Hall, Calgary It's easy to dismiss The Weirdness, The Stooges first full album of all new material since 1973's Raw Power, as a major disappointment. Gone is the primal noise and poetic dysfunction that characterized the group's previous efforts. This obviously isn't the same band that shocked concertgoers and provoked riots back in the sixties and seventies.

Time has significantly mellowed their sound and lifestyles (next to Keith Richards, Iggy Pop is the most weathered looking performer in rock). But it's not that bad. Former Minuteman Mike Watt does an admirable job filling in for the late Dave Alexander on bass and producer Steve Albini (Nirvana's In Utero, Pixies' Surfer Rosa) adds his aggressive touch.

In actuality, The Weirdness should do nothing to hurt the group's legacy, rather it may finally reveal to indie hipsters that The Stooges were overrated to begin with.
