Avril Lavigne managed to edge out Nine Inch Nails for the #1 spot on the sales chart this week as her new album, The Best Damn Thing, sold 286,000 copies in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Nine Inch Nails' sixth studio release, Year Zero, enters the chart at #2, selling 187,000 copies. The NOW 24 hits compilation slips to #3 after two weeks at #1, and yet another American Idol contestant, Bucky Covington, made his presence known at #4 with his self-titled debut album, selling 61,000 units.

The Top 10 sellers were rounded out by Martina McBride at #5, Akon at #6, Daughtry at #7, Tim McGraw at #8, Carrie Underwood (another Idol contestant) at #9 and Timbaland at #10. Only two other releases debuted in the Top 100 this week. Country artist Clay Walker earns his best charting week ever as Fall enters at #15 with 32,000 copies sold, and R B singer Lumidee's sophomore effort, Unexpected, comes in at #44 with 16,000.
