When it comes to music and videos these days do we really know what our children are listening to? Some lyrics and images depicted in music and videos can be degrading to women, glamorize bad habits and attitudes in young people. That s the reason behind a special class at Fourth Street Baptist Church in Columbus.

The Reverend Johnny Flakes III is one a several instructors teaching young people between the age of thirteen to eighteen.
It s called the "Truth Behind the Hip Hop". Flakes calls his lessons a spiritual understanding of what s wrong with what some of the music kids listen to.

"It s not going into us saying don t do this, don t do that, but really providing them with information for them to make choices particularly within the context of them being Christians,"says Flakes.
Seventeen year old Mack Clemons Junior is like every other teenager who listens to rap music. By taking this class, he says understands why some things shouldn t be heard.

"We really had to just basically go through the music and look at the lyrics and see what they were actually saying, than what our minds are grasping through the beat,"says Clemons.
According to Flakes, negative lyrics has an overall affect on more than just young minds. "It may come forth in terms of attitudes, it may come forth in terms of choices that are being made.

It may come forth in terms of their dress and so those are the types of things we want to bring to their consciousness and to their sensitivity,"says Flakes.
It s free to the public and open to anyone interested no matter what age they are.
The class is from 6:00 p.

m. to 7:00 p.m.
