One of metal's finest guitar players, Dimebag Darrell Abbott was born on August 20, 1966 in Dallas, Texas. Born into a musical family, his father was a country and western songwriter and producer, Dimebag Darrell's interest in hard rock and heavy metal began to grow upon his discovery of KISS and their guitarist Ace Frehley. He entered numerous guitar competitions in the Dallas area which resulted in him winning an instrument that he would eventually become closely associated with, the Dean ML.
In 1981, Dimebag Darrell along with his brother, drummer Vinnie Paul, formed what would turn out to be one of the most popular heavy metal bands of the 1990s. Beginning with "Cowboys from Hell", Pantera touched off a string of classic metal releases; "Vulgar Display of Power" followed and with it, brought the band star status and domination in the hard rock/metal music community for a decade. The band received four Grammy nominations, platinum for "The Great Southern Trendkill", "Cowboys from Hell" and Pantera's "Greatest Hits" and double platinum for "Vulgar Display of Power" and "Far Beyond Driven", which had its debut at No.
1 on the Billboard album chart. Released in 2000, "Reinventing the Steel" was the final studio effort from the band. Darrell and Vinnie went on to form Damageplan, releasing "New Found Power" in 2004.
During a Damageplan performance in Columbus, Ohio, on December 8, 2004, Dimebag was fatally shot at the age of 38.
Dimebag Darrell Abbott will always be remembered as one of the most influential guitarists in modern metal music.

Metal has always been the most overlooked of all music, yeah some metal bands have millions of fans but they are always shunned by media etc.

I actually got turned on to metal by Dime's death. My friend told me that he died, I checked out soem Pantera, and from then on got hooked to metal.
From there I discovered shred, and here I am. His death was responsible for my musical evolution.

I'm not really into metal, but I like a few Pantera songs a lot, like 10s and Floods in particular, so to me he is one of the greatest guitarists there has been, but f*ck, I didn't know him while he was alive, and maybe wouldn't know him now if he still was.

Not only was Dime an AMAZING guitar player but he was a rock star who cared alot for his fans as well. The most memorable quotes from him i think usually had to do with the way he reacted with his fans. Dimebag certainly does deserve this, he was, and is remembered as one of the greatest metal guitarists ever, it's awesome to see his efforts for music being recognised But please just keep it in perspective.

The pantera website doesnt actually go back any further than like, cowboys from hell, coz the band couldnt stand their first few albums. I believe the idea was to try to make you think that CFH was their first.

I love Dimebag I really do, but I do believe he has become a Martyr since his death (like most deceased heavy metal stars do) and I think his role in the development of heavy metal as we know it today (albeit significant) has been over-exaggerated.
Guys I miss Dimebag too, but honestly, not every 2 in 3 UG users needs to post RIP Dime every time he is so much as mentioned on UG.

It looks the firts album in the wording because it was their first INFLUENTIAL album. Before that album they were hair metal, than they went heavier, and with Cowboys , their signature sound came out, son in a sense, it is their debut album because it is a debut of signature Pantera. and no, he didn't get me into metal, i was an established headbanger a few years for his murder.

It was their fifth. It was just their major label debut. They actually struggled immensely in the beginning of the band to get a label.
