One of metal's finest guitar players, Dimebag Darrell Abbott was born on August 20, 1966 in Dallas, Texas. Born into a musical family, his father was a country and western songwriter and producer, Dimebag Darrell's interest in hard rock and heavy metal began to grow upon his discovery of KISS and their guitarist Ace Frehley. He entered numerous guitar competitions in the Dallas area which resulted in him winning an instrument that he would eventually become closely associated with, the Dean ML.
In 1981, Dimebag Darrell along with his brother, drummer Vinnie Paul, formed what would turn out to be one of the most popular heavy metal bands of the 1990s. Beginning with "Cowboys from Hell", Pantera touched off a string of classic metal releases; "Vulgar Display of Power" followed and with it, brought the band star status and domination in the hard rock/metal music community for a decade. The band received four Grammy nominations, platinum for "The Great Southern Trendkill", "Cowboys from Hell" and Pantera's "Greatest Hits" and double platinum for "Vulgar Display of Power" and "Far Beyond Driven", which had its debut at No.
1 on the Billboard album chart. Released in 2000, "Reinventing the Steel" was the final studio effort from the band. Darrell and Vinnie went on to form Damageplan, releasing "New Found Power" in 2004.
During a Damageplan performance in Columbus, Ohio, on December 8, 2004, Dimebag was fatally shot at the age of 38.
Dimebag Darrell Abbott will always be remembered as one of the most influential guitarists in modern metal music.
The induction event is free and open to the public.

Awesome! Glad to see all of the respect he deserves.
We miss you Dime mad love to dime, especially on today 4/20. congrats dime, its a shame you couldn't be here with us to accept the honor. Cool, glad to hear it.
Apparently Dimebag was buried in a custom KISS Kasket :S I bet if he was still alive he woulndt be there...
But please just keep it in perspective. Rock on wherever you may be, Dime.
Not Dead Enough, I respect your views, but you have to understand that there are hard hitting Dime fans out there, its called paying memory, lets say if Dime was alive, we wouldnt really mention him, why?
be reasonable, there is no real point in mentioning his name in no apperant reason, now that he is dead, of course it is but respectable to pay respect regardless you are a fan of him or not, after all, death is once...
Memory is forever...
The wording of the sentence makes it seem like he's saying Cowboys From Hell was Pantera's first album, I think it was their fifth. Awesome!!
He deserves it, but what about poeple like Tommi Iomi?? He INVENTED metal paractically!
GOOD. now all they need to do is put the corpse of the bastard who shot him on display as a warning to those who f*ck with metal!!
!!!
and dime should be shredding in hell, not resting in peace. I think most will agree when I say that not only is this a great acknowledgement to Dime but also metal in general. Metal has always been the most overlooked of all music, yeah some metal bands have millions of fans but they are always shunned by media etc.
unless they decide to do a TV feature on it which normally turns out treating metal fans like some strange species. More metal bands need more recognition, and to anyone that would class that as sellng out..
. **** selling out, just because the media gives a band attention does not automatically make them sellouts, as long as they keep that little bit of individuality and uniqueness then thats all that matters. No, your wrong.
It most certainly was not their debut. Thought Cowboys From Hell was their second album. Ah well, I don't know Pantera's discography by heart.
Either way, Dimebag, Cliff Burton, and Randy Rhoads are rocking out in Heaven as we speak. Rest in peace, legendary musicians. not a huge fan of him.
but, he was a pretty awesome guitar player. id be stupid not to say it. I wasn't a fan till after he was gone and I feel a fraud for reading anything Dime related for it, but he has had an effect on my playing and I guess to some extend to my life.
you never know when your last day is going to be...
.
I actually got turned on to metal by Dime's death. My friend told me that he died, I checked out soem Pantera, and from then on got hooked to metal.
From there I discovered shred, and here I am. His death was responsible for my musical evolution.
You can probably tell I'm still very young.
If he was still alive for another 20-30 years his death wouldn't have gave him as much praise as this. Pretty much the same way as Clapton, if he had died back in his heyday he would be considered one of the best, not alot of people think that nowadays. And should I even mention Kurt Cobain?
Imo, of course.
And I do respect Dimebag and don't deny his contributions to metal. Kurt Cobain was a great songwriter but mediocre guitarist.
I think the idea of this post is that Dimebag contributed to metal by way of his musical style and talent. I personally think he is overrated and his death gave him more credit than he deserved. But, Pantera rocks and he contributed greatly to that band.
youre making it sound like he's not considered great, but that if he had died back in the day that he would be considered so...
umm...
. he IS considered great, which is why he is in the RockWalk..
and hes NOT dead. Leonheart wrote:Pretty much the same way as Clapton, if he had died back in his heyday he would be considered one of the best, not alot of people think that nowadays.

And on the topic of Kurt Cobain, there are tons more better writers than him, but he died when his band was at its height. Which is a surefire way to get remembered. And even if he didn't die he'd get put in the Metallica/Zeppelin route As in they were amazing back then but not anymore.

He is considered great (Clapton) but if he died back then he would be considered by alot of guitarists maybe even on par with Jimi Hendrix.

I think I speak for all of UG when I say that you are a ****ing shithole. I also don't think it would be that far from the truth if I assumed that you will never be close to what Dime was, so keep that shit to yourself, and you wont get flamed. Asshole.
He wants to get flamed. The only reason he said it was to wind people up and get a rise out of someone.
If there's one thing Darrell wasn't, it's overrated.
Truly one of the great metal guitarists. Cool news. I only have two Pantera albums, but they both rock.
RIP Dime. I think I speak for all of UG when I say that you are a ****ing shithole. I also don't think it would be that far from the truth if I assumed that you will never be close to what Dime was, so keep that shit to yourself, and you wont get flamed.
Asshole.
You make it seem as if he'd be allowed to say that if he was as good as Abbott, pretty dumb if you meant it.
I'm not really into metal, but I like a few Pantera songs a lot, like 10s and Floods in particular, so to me he is one of the greatest guitarists there has been, but f*ck, I didn't know him while he was alive, and maybe wouldn't know him now if he still was.
Maybe he doesn't get more respect than he deserves, but he has had way more publicity etc.
And for God's sake it's good to know that I'm not the only one who gets bugged by R.I.
P. Dime every other reply. even tho that makes no sense.
.. dime was truly great
i respect that everyone loves Pantera and Dime (me included) but putting this RIP DIME everytime he's mentioned is really f*cking stupid.
...
when you put that, you make it seem like he's going to read that...
..
just spare the bullshit k?
Dime is a god. He should get every recognition he deserves for his work for metal, not just for the way it developed, but for how many fans Pantera got for being who they were. No it was their debut.
..
i dont mean to get all technical but Phil was on Power Metal.
.. the album before Cowboys from Hell.
on that album they sounded like priest but faster. This is pretty cool. I think he deserves it.
And I think everyone needs to stop getting sand all up in their vaginas because someone posted an opinion on dime different than their own. People are different, they have different opinions. Get over it.
Not only was Dime an AMAZING guitar player but he was a rock star who cared alot for his fans as well. The most memorable quotes from him i think usually had to do with the way he reacted with his fans. Dimebag certainly does deserve this, he was, and is remembered as one of the greatest metal guitarists ever, it's awesome to see his efforts for music being recognised But please just keep it in perspective.
Dude, James Hetfield sucks now. In the 80's, when Metallica was thrash, he kicked ass. I think that he should just leave and call quits on Metallica.
So I bet that if he died in the early 90's, it would probably have had more of an effect then. Much like the effect was recieved when Cliff Burton died. But on the article itself, great news about Dimebag.
He deserves it.
No it was their debut..
.Nope, fifth. They had Metal Magic, Projects In The Jungle, I Am The Night, and Power Metal before Cowboys From Hell.
Cowboys was their first thrash album though, all the ones before it were glam metal, and they never played songs from their four earliest albums live after Cowboys From Hell.
Just clearing that up.
And Dime was awesome, and I think people only fully realised how awesome he was after he died.
Thought Cowboys From Hell was their second album. Ah well, I don't know Pantera's discography by heart.
Either way, Dimebag, Cliff Burton, and Randy Rhoads are rocking out in Heaven as we speak.
Rest in peace, legendary musicians.
The pantera website doesnt actually go back any further than like, cowboys from hell, coz the band couldnt stand their first few albums. I believe the idea was to try to make you think that CFH was their first.
Everybody slam a Blacktooth Grin in honor of Dime!
Damn it! I wanted to say that!
also
dime should be shredding in hell, not resting in peace.
If that's all the guitarists on there than NO WAY do I think he should be added.
Read the article dude, it's not about guitarists but great musical innovators and contributors.
Yeah, people might say RIP DIMEBAG too often, but you never really know what you've got until it's gone, and you can really see the complete effect come full-circle. We take it all for granted. spent 4/20 hittin the bong hard and playing along to CFH, and vulger display of power.
That was my own little tribute but, this is great. When I started listening everyone was like who the **** is pantera?
Now everyone knows Dime.
That's great! But, I rather have him alive and unknown. it is such a shame he had to die, more so for his reputation and popularity to grow with his death.
As jimmcs2000 says, I would rather have him alive and well, but stil writing the best s**t heavy groove metal out there.
Rock in peace Dime. UG wrote:Abbott will be located directly adjacent to other equally accomplished musicians and innovators on the RockWalk such as Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, Johnny Cash, Van Halen, Carl Perkins, Brian Wilson,
If that's all the guitarists on there than NO WAY do I think he should be added.
Read the article dude, it's not about guitarists but great musical innovators and contributors.
Aye, but don't you think Page, Yngwie, Iommi, and even Hetfield were more inovative than him? Kurt Cobain was a great songwriter but mediocre guitarist.
I think the idea of this post is that Dimebag contributed to metal by way of his musical style and talent. I personally think he is overrated and his death gave him more credit than he deserved. But, Pantera rocks and he contributed greatly to that band.
when you call him mediocre i think your being very kind, cobain wasn't even mediocre when you compare him to proper guitarists. and he inspired a generation of people to not learn how to play guitar properly. imo of course (but im rite) hellyeah, dime deserves so much for his contributions to the music scene.
rest in peace brother!!!
! Oh crap, I had no idea he was that young. I'm surprised he hasn't already been inducted, in all honesty.
And to Wabusy, you're practically saying that now he's dead people who haven't heard of Dime shouldn't listen to Pantera. I didn't discover Jeff Buckley until last year, dead for 10 years, and I now own every album by him and follow him obsessively, so are you saying I have no right to call myself a fan because I discovered him after he was dead? I doubt thats what you mean, just check your wording next time.
Oh, and I completely agree with you on the Cobain thing.
No what I meant to say is he's getting too much attention just because he was murdered and there's probably people who call themselves fans of his now just because it's the cool thing to do. I bet if he was still alive he woulndt be there.
..
I actually have to agree with you.
I love Dimebag I really do, but I do believe he has become a Martyr since his death (like most deceased heavy metal stars do) and I think his role in the development of heavy metal as we know it today (albeit significant) has been over-exaggerated.
Guys I miss Dimebag too, but honestly, not every 2 in 3 UG users needs to post RIP Dime every time he is so much as mentioned on UG.
I bet if James Hetfield (god forbid) died tomorrow, every single UG post for years to come would end with RIP James Hetfield , but I don't see you all now ending your posts with Long live James Hetfield or something like that.
Just because someone dies, even if their contribution was huge and worth noting, don't blow it out of proportion and suddenly act as if you cared as much for them all along.
YES I know Dimebag influenced many bands today, wrote some great songs and earned the respect of many bands that even he was inspired by. By god I respect his memory enormously.
I'm well aware of the fantastic contribution he made to the music we all love, and I think this Rockwalk induction is exactly what he deserves.
But please just keep it in perspective.
Wow, who gives a shit if people are saying RIP Dime people can respect him all they want, no one is overdoing it by every 2 in 3 people saying it, because every person that says it is meaning it because it actually saddens them that he is gone.
Also, who cares if his role in metal has been exaggerated since his death. I think it has a little bit, but he still deserves every credit he gets, whether he so called deserves it , or whether it is just a tribute to him because he died. It doesn't matter, he was a great guitarist and deserves to be placed up there with the greats, even if it is just a tribute.
How can these people miss HIM when they never knew him as a friend or a family member or anything. What you see of Dimebag is the music he plays/writes and what he says on interviews and how you see him on stage, you didn't know him as a person or a friend and I totally agree that he's become a martyr since he's died, i bet loads of people only started listening to pantera because of dime's death. I think you guys should just let the dude rest.
Anyways I think it's good that he will be remembered with greats such as Clapton and Santana.
Strictly speaking you don't actually know I never knew him as a person in real life (just for the record I never did, but just remember you don't actually know). The dude deserves this.
He truly was one of the greatist people to have been in the metal scene.
You will be forever missed by all! Yeah, people might say RIP DIMEBAG too often, but you never really know what you've got until it's gone, and you can really see the complete effect come full-circle.
We take it all for granted.
Man im one of those peolpe who'll always remember where they were when they heard about dime being shot - he was much a hero to me then as he is now. I think the publicity it got has been great as many metal fans have discovered the best feckin band in the world thru it.
Every one of you should go out and buy the pantera home videos. You can see that apart from the musical talent, this is the funniest, most harmless, party monster you could imagine, the last person in the world who deserved to be murdered.
(^Thats becoming a cliche in itself, i see) The wording of the sentence makes it seem like he's saying Cowboys From Hell was Pantera's first album, I think it was their fifth.
It looks the firts album in the wording because it was their first INFLUENTIAL album. Before that album they were hair metal, than they went heavier, and with Cowboys , their signature sound came out, son in a sense, it is their debut album because it is a debut of signature Pantera. and no, he didn't get me into metal, i was an established headbanger a few years for his murder.
I took the classic rock-to-sabbath route to get into metal The wording of the sentence makes it seem like he's saying Cowboys From Hell was Pantera's first album, I think it was their fifth.
No it wasn't. You must not know anything about Pantera.
It was their fifth. It was just their major label debut. They actually struggled immensely in the beginning of the band to get a label.
damn straight, like him or not, he was definently innovative and deserves it. RIP Dimebag.
