Over the weekend, Chicago received word that (USOC) as the U.S. candidate to host the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.
The Windy City narrowly edged out rivaling venue Los Angeles in what USOC Chairman Peter Ueberroth called a "very, very close" vote. (Didn't L.A.
have the games in 1984? The games of Mary Lou Retton and Carl Lewis? I think the USOC made the fair choice.
)
Chicago Mayor Richard Daley said the bid provides "a great opportunity for us as we move forward to really sell Chicago and America." The proposed $366 million Olympic Stadium would be located on the South Side of the city, while a $1.1 billion Olympic village would be constructed along the city's picturesque lakefront.
"Personally, I love the idea of athletes on the lakefront," Ueberroth noted, adding "Let's hope Chicago gets the opportunity."
But don't start making your Drake hotel reservations just yet ..
. the International Olympic Committee will not make a final decision on the hosting city until October 2009. Other cities with their proverbial hats in the ring include Tokyo, Rio de Janeiro, Rome, Madrid, New Delhi, and Qatar.
New York City lost its bid for the 2012 Summer Games to London; the last summer Olympics hosted on American soil was in 1996, when Atlanta acted as host.

With March Madness on the books and the World Series a long way away, the world's gamblers need another race to follow.
With Prince William newly single, the odds-makers are on who England's most eligible bachelor might be courting next.
On the list, with fairly generous odds of 20-1, is reportedly rehabilitated pop starlet Britney Spears, who was rumored to have engaged in email flirtation with Prince William five years ago. Other potential suitors for William (and therefore possible heirs to the throne of England -- how frightening) include Paris Hilton, with 14-1 odds (!
), and Heather Mills (formerly Heather Mills McCartney), who has proven talented at earning the love of beloved Englishmen and then dragging their names and fortunes through the muck.
I'm not a gambling woman by nature, but I must say these odds are not ones I'd take. I just can't conceive of the chances being all that good for a Britney/William union (or a Paris/William match-up, for that matter).
By means of comparison, bookmakers have on the Cincinnati Reds winning the World Series (300 to 1 for the Washington Nationals), and there are certainly fewer teams in Major League Baseball than there are eligible young women interested in Prince William's hand.

Interested in an ornately decorated pseudo amusement park that was the site to controversial slumber parties and one of the most colossal mental collapses in American celebrity history?
You snooze, you lose, and you may now have some steep competition. According to that benchmark of journalistic integrity, The New York Post's "Page Six," Michael Jackson may finally be in an effort to pay down a reported $200 million in debt Is he willing to acknowledge his dire financial straits now?
The reclusive pop star originally put his 2,700-acre Santa Barbara estate on the market several years ago (and fled the premises in 2005), but it may have attracted a buyer in the form of Bill Huff.
Sources indicate that Mr. Huff is willing to pay roughly $20 million for the property, which was originally listed closer to $50 million, which includes a zoo, a movie theater, carnival rides and all of that fun pop-culture history.
Compared with what the Beckhams are , that's a steal.
Representatives for the King of Pop refute the report, however, stating that Neverland is not, in fact, for sale and that reports of negotiations with Mr. Huff are "not true."

The self-proclaimed "Prince of Darkness" has a soul after all. Earlier this year, Ozzy Osbourne and wife Sharon announced that to Ozzfest, an 11 year-old melee of metal madness. The change is quite a show of generosity, as last year's festival tickets were as pricey as $125 a pop.
Earlier this week the official festival website provided detailed instructions for procuring these free passes.
Currently, the only headlining artists who have signed up for the tour (and will not be compensated for their time or efforts) are Lamb of God, Hatebreed, and Lordi (three of my favorites, right after Hanson, Billy Joel, and Duran Duran!) An article in today's Fortune briefly explores the r , asking "why would a headliner perform for nothing?
" Ozzy's lovely wife Sharon argues that the festival provides a captive audience, some of whom will buy pricey merchandise and some of whom will be converted into new fans, with the power to buy CDs down the road.
Even though it should be all about the music, the fans, and the devil-horned hand gestures, the lineup is conspicuously different. Last year's Ozzfest featured such high-profile names as System of a Down and Disturbed; previous years have offered performances from Velvet Revolver, Slipknot, Korn, Marilyn Manson, Tool, and Black Sabbath.
One has to wonder how the audience turnout will be for this free show of lesser-known artists. If sings "Walk With Me In Hell" but no one pays to hear it, is it really a concert?

Arguably the most polarizing issue in American pop culture since Rachel and Ross, is loathed by millions, beloved by millions more, and ironically supported by and others hoping to summarily squash the six-seasons-old
American Idol franchise in one fell swoop. But one thing is certain ..
. while the kid may not have the pipes of Melinda Doolittle, the charm of Chris Richardson, or the inventiveness of Blake Lewis, he is certainly a marketable commodity.
To this end, the president of KFC - a division of (NYSE: ) - has in an attempt to raise awareness of its KFC Famous Bowls.
According to PostChronicle.com, a letter reportedly penned last week offers: "If you don a bowl hairdo during one of your next nationally televised performances, KFC will grant you a free lifetime supply of KFC Famous Bowls. We're sure America will be as 'bowled-over' by your take on this classic look as they are by our KFC Famous Bowls.

The Gateway Grizzlies are a Frontier League team that just-so happens to play about 12 miles from my home.
Last month, Tom Barlow mentioned how one of the ballpark's unique concoctions is a hamburger that with a (NYSE: ) doughnut. I must say, I'm equal parts tantalized and repulsed, and have informed my husband and friends that we WILL be attending a Grizzlies game this summer, if only to try the delicacy (and, of course, to support the fledgling team).
While KKD has been on my mind of late as I dream of the perverse amalgam of ground beef and fried dough, it is also under the microscope this week as it prepares to release its fourth-quarter 2007 earnings after the close on Thursday.
Analysts are currently expecting the firm to bank anywhere between five and eight cents per share (according to Zacks.com).
The technical picture is currently improving on the shares; just this week, KKD managed to hurdle above resistance at its 80-day moving average for the first time since February 23.
For the time being, the stock has also regained control of its 10-week and 20-week moving averages.

Other than an occasional road trip back to the home office in Cincinnati, to which I safely venture in the confines of my own Volvo S-40, I don't have to do a whole lot of business travel. I'm part of a growing minority, however, as more and more female professionals are hitting the jetways and highways for business travel. The increased number of female travelers is having a , from improved hotel rooms to enhanced safety features.
Typical hotel rooms have bettered their creature comforts, supplying better bedding, more palatable room service, and improved closets and work spaces. Improved lighting is helping business travelers of both genders feel more safe. Many attribute these changes to the ramped-up presence of female business travelers, who are more apt to share their experiences with friends and co-workers.
Every time I walk through a mall (not too often these days), I see a new "hip" store of which I was previously unaware. I can always count on a few mainstays, though ..
. the cell-phone-accessory kiosk manned by overly enthusiastic employees, the tantalizing aroma from Auntie Anne's pretzels, and the always tasteful novelty shops. In most malls, I can typically scope out the latest yuppie fashions in either (NYSE: ) or (NYSE: ) (and often-times both).
Despite the encroachment of (NASDAQ: ), (NASDAQ: ), and other trendy competitors, these two venerable names have stood the test of time, providing relatively affordable threads for men, women, and kids.
In addition to its eponymous chain, which was started in 1969, GPS runs the Old Navy and Banana Republic chains. The retailer's most recent experiment, Forth Towne (created to appeal to thirty-something career woman) was a bust and has now been abandoned after 18 months. Same-store sales trends have turned south of late, dropping five percent in fiscal year 2005 and slumping seven percent last year.
And during the past 12-month cycle, GPS has seen its quarterly earnings drop more than 35 percent. The stock is well off its highs, having lost two-thirds of its value since early 2000. With technical resistance bearing down in the form of the equity's 10-month and 20-month moving averages, relief might not be in sight for a while.
