Interpol brings style and post-post punk

When NYC indie rockers and elegant fashionisters Interpol come to Canada, they don't mess around with old school cliches. "Rousing ourselves with shudders of anticipation, the Interpol will embark again to meet the world on a sojourn of sound. We will begin by traversing the Great White North," the band says of a tour that had stops in Ottawa and Kitchener before hitting London tonight at Cowboys Ranch.

"Huskies blazing trails. Bountiful. Hungry.

No jettison. We come to you with a newness. Thank you," continue the greetings to Canadian fans.

Among the interpretations of all those words from Interpol -- known for snazzy black suits on the band members; beautiful, stark album artwork and cutting-edge videos -- is that the band is test-marketing its next album. The third Interpol album has been expected for months with a summer release predicted. "The album will likely come out later than June -- still TBC (to be confirmed)," says an industry source.

Interpol started in 1998. After some changes, the lineup of Paul Banks on voice and guitar, Daniel Kessler on guitar, Carlos D. on bass and Sam Fogarino on drums became the Interpol that found the fans.

Its first album, 2002's Turn on the Bright Lights, sold hundreds of thousands of copies and landed Interpol's atmospheric music on such TV shows as Friends, Six Feet Under and The O.C. Two years later, the followup CD, Antics (Matador/EMI) added to Interpol's reputation as masters of dark and moody post-post-punk.

Antics wasn't as stylishly dark as Bright Lights. Not quite. The difference was subtle -- like a lighter shade of black, critics said.

This time, Kessler tells British music publication NME that Interpol is investigating new textures. "We had keyboards on from the start, which we've never done before -- it's like a fifth member. There's a lot more texture, and interesting sounds.

There's definitely progression and growth." Interpol is expected to hit the stage about 10 p.m.

tonight.
