I took and saw at last night.

Cal's is a hole in the wall, a shot and beer joint and proud of it. But around the edges music paraphernalia is starting to creep it's way in. Tour posters, broken guitars, band stickers and assorted musical nicknacks adorn the walls.

The stage is the cold barren cement floor. But the place is small, cozy, laid back and the sound is good (beers are cheap - $2.50).

I was surprised that Dana turned up as a trio for the night. Dana's guitar and vocals were accompanied by beautiful harmonies and assorted percussion from two fellow Austinites (Erica and Gina). By percussion I mean stolen children's toys, foot stomps and old battered coke cans squished along to the beat.

Dana played songs from her new ep Paper Sailboat and newer songs she's still working the kinks out of. After the band resolved some distortion/feedback issues they quickly found a grove. One of the standouts was the gypsy flavored "Leave In The Middle Of The Night".

Fan favorite "Sadie" was the closer. Anyway just wanted to let you know that a good time was had by all.

Also in a few months you're going to be hearing a lot about new record on /Absolutely Kosher. Try not to tune it out and pick up the record if you can.

Misra has really hit it's stride and found it's niche with bands like Evangelicals, Shearwater, Flotation toy Warning and now Hallelujah. On many of the songs cello battles with guitar which are overtaken by soaring trumpets. Samples and electronic noise are added to the mix.

And then Ryan Walsh's lead vocals break though the clutter. I'm really impressed by this record. Their "fight song" is the one available download from the record, although their are some nice live and demo tracks up at their site.

Here's the self-titled fight song - "Hallelujah the Hills".

WOW.

..Richard Shindell's "South of Delia"

I don't normally beg for music.

I usually receive something in the mail, or get an email from the artist or as is more often the case find music myself online. But with Richard Shindell's new record I resorted to begging. Luckily one of the great indie publicists is working the record.

is one of the truly great singer-songwriters working today. He's got a beautiful, singular voice (equaled only by Ellis Paul, Slaid Cleaves and Greg Brown), is a great lyricist/storyteller and an equally talented guitarist. He's also a very talented interpreter of "popular songs", first with his folk supergroup (with Dar Williams and Lucy Kaplansky) and now with his new record of covers, South Of Delia.

I'd get a lot more traffic if I posted his unusual reading of Bruce Springsteen's "Born In The USA" or his version of the Robbie Robertson penned Band classic "Acadian Driftwood". I'd probably get some young hipsters if I linked to his take on Josh Ritter's "Lawrence, KS". And these are all great songs but the historical and socio-political song "The Humpback Whale" really connected with me (hey, it's got Richard Thompson on guitar so that should really bring `em in).

The song was originally written about the practice of humpback whale hunting, a practice that nearly drove the whale to extinction, by the Scottish singer Harry Robertson but was also covered by . I'm not familiar with either of those previous versions but on this one Richard Shindell's nylon string guitar plucking sounds sublime and his vocals are perfect for this bit of historical storytelling. You can pre-order this release now only through Richard's online store (it's shipping now so it'll arrive in a couple of days).

One of Richard's own historical songs about the human costs of the civil war - "Reunion Hill" (plus to watch Richard perform one of his fan favorites - "Next Best Western")

The English band finally has their new record out in the states.

I wrote about the import back in February and as I'm generally a fan of any band comparedto The Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev and Radar Bros I'm glad to mention it again. Buy the US release though

Another first/best/exclusive - West Dakota's "Winners" (with members of Doveman, The Robot Ate Me, and Samamidon)(Swim Slowly Records, April 3)

This is the best song you'll hear all week.

Period. That used to be quite a boast but with the number of blogs and online/offline music possibilities it may not hold the same weight. Nonetheless this little gem from upcoming debut full length, Turn Around Leaders on )(Doveman, The Robot Ate Me), hits all the right warbly high notes, strums just the right banjo chords, references the perfect number of mythical beasts, and namedrops the coolest philosophical theories ( ).

West Dakota is Edna Rosenburg with help from Ryland Bouchard ( ), , and Thomas Bartlett ( ).

Buy it for $10.

**World Premiere** Montt Mardie's new 2 disc set "Clocks/Pretender" (duets with Hello Saferide, Jens Lekman and more)

went from some kind of bedroom pop dreamer with a crappy .tk web address two years ago to suddenly being at the forefront of the burgeoning Swedish pop movement. His new record, the 2 cd set Clocks ( ) is one of the most eagerly anticipated releases of the year.

Disc one contains 10 new songs while disc two is full of duets with the likes of , , Andreas Mattsson and many more.

I've lost the ability to discern whether or not an artist is an acquired taste or not. With Montt Mardie I expect that he is somewhat of an acquired taste, but he's an acquired taste like the Jackson 5 were or like a band like The Smiths were or even Robyn Hitchcock's spacier stuff was.

Either way, for me, the heavy funk baseline, funky organ and groovy background singers of "Hacienda" and Montt's characteristically pinched, high-pitched vocals are a perfect blend of pop, disco and Motown funk. To acquire a taste of this charming musician simply listen to the new song "Hacienda", watch the video of "High School" and the mp3 of "1969". Buy it here .

I have about ten posts that are half written that I fear I'll never finish. So here they are in their infancy, unedited and clearly not ready for primetime:

I was hoping to write about .

From everything I'd heard she'd be right up my ally (I feared perhaps a little too produced and also too L.A.) but I find her song "Girls" to be just the right blend of AAA smooth and Tom Waits cool.

I don't know anything about a Uzi and Ari ( )(here on ) except that they're from the southwest and are popular in Europe. Their music is a mellow blend of electronic pop and experimental soundscapes.

The new record is called It Is Freezing Out and is available on Luxemborg's Own Records.

In the mp3 blogging universe it's already too late to be writing about releases that came out in January of 2007 (in fact you're downright behind the times if you're not on leaked May releases). I get caught up in the game as much as anyone so it'll come as a shocker that acclaimed americana release Bethune came out originally in January of 2006.

A release this strong has legs though.

bio on the White Whale records site namedrops The Boss, The Constantines, Smog and Fleetwood Mac. That's quite a range of influences and stylistic pairings. The band's new record Wildfire is due out some time this winter.

Guests on the new record include band members from Great Aunt Ida, Wolf Parade and Ghost House.

"Wear Em Out" is a song that is a good example of the bands purported shift from campfire songs to little indie rock gems.
