Island Def Jam Music Group (IDJMG) has announced it is relaunching Mercury Records, with David Massey overseeing the label. Massey had been EVP of A R for Sony Music Label Group U.S.
since 2004. He will be based in New York City and report to Antonio "L.A.
" Reid and Steve Bartels.
Mercury Records had continued to exist as a label overseas, but the imprint was closed eight years ago as part of Seagram's purchase of PolyGram, which led to the creation of the Universal Music Group. In Europe, IDJMG artists such as Bon Jovi and Elton John are under the Mercury label.
Only a handful of releases are expected from Mercury in the U.S. this year.
