dylanThe moral of the story seems to be this: Moses did not stroll the desert for 40 years so that you could listen to Blood on the Tracks. And so, taking the whole do-not-worship-false-idols commandment into strange and silly new waters, Pope Benedict has at Bob Dylan, saying the lyrical bard is the wrong kind of prophet. (The Pope is apparently an expert on wrong kinds of prophets, being a former Hitler Youth , and all.

)
In case you don’t Digg papal news, let us bring you up to date. , Ratzinger expressed his anger (envy?) that his marginally hipper predecessor, Pope John Paul, appeared on stage with Dylan back in 1997.

Ratzinger is also disappointed that some of Dylan’s anti-war epics are given the hymn treatment at mass. The Pope would prefer you listened to some Gregorian chants. Or suffer!

But Dylan is an odd target, given his general instinct to avoid blasphemy and sacrilege. He’s never claimed to be a prophet, in the religious sense. He’s never even made a Lennon-esque “I’m bigger than Jesus” quip.

Dylan is just a guy who sees the world with a keener eye and mind than any other songwriter. (One possible complication: That whole “ ” thing.)

  • Another book about Dylan?

Wow! That sounds so unnecessary! Actually, the book (out in June) sounds kinda cool.

It s an oral history that explores the great man s influence on culture via the musings of his peers/admirers. When that list includes the Beatles, the Band, Bono, Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen and many others, the idea sounds a lot more compelling.

  • Whoa, apparently Pearl Jam will be headlining Lollapalooza?

According to the the legendary rockers (who gave their young career a boost performing at the festival back in 1992) are expected to take over the top spot at this year s festival, held August 3-5.

  • Bobby Brown, who was , after paying the balance of what he owed to Kim Ward, the mother of his kids.
  • Wilco tease all of American by announcing a slew of tour dates, all of which will take place overseas.

However, as points out, the band s scheduled appearance at Bonnaroo in June makes an American tour plausible. Tour dates after the jump.

  • Bob Dylan Simon CowellWe have always been in Simon Cowell’s corner.

His expert evisceration of American Idol contestants is unequivocally entertaining. So we used to feel pretty confident that there was nothing he could do to truly offend or horrify us. After all that is his THING…and nobody does it better.

But then he went and shit talked Bob Dylan.
According to the , Cowell recently indirectly refuted the long-standing (and patently ridiculous) rumor that the American troubadour might appear as a guest judge on a future American Idol by saying that he prefers Kelly Clarkson s music to Bob Dylan s. We’re presuming this was said without sarcasm…or drugs.

I ve never bought a Dylan record, claims the Idol maker. A singing poet? It just bores me to tears.

But he didn’t stop there. He goes on to say that a Dylan-inspired season of American Idol would suck. I ve got to tell you, if I had 10 Dylans in the final of American Idol, we would not be getting 30 million viewers a week.

I don t believe the Bob Dylans of this world would make American Idol a better show.
We used to respect Simon as a savvy social scientist—someone who gets the most out of the lowest common denominator within our culture. But we though he actually KNEW what good music was…even if it wasn’t what he was selling.

Evidently we were wrong and now we hate him.
But that’s us…how do YOU feel about Simon’s Bob bashing? * The following code is Copyright 1998-2004 Opinionlab, Inc.
