THE SONGS OF Gloria Estefan and Santana were big hits Tuesday on American Idol. I was waiting for the big theme night that would trip up our front-runners, LaKisha Jones and Melinda Doolittle. Apparently Latin rhythms did the job.
Some standouts were Blake Lewis with his rendition of Marc Anthony s I Need to Know and Jordin Sparks on Rhythm is Gonna Get You, the only decent Estefan performance.
Guest mentor Jennifer Lopez was much more interesting and involved than some of the past stars. She tried her best to drag the Latin heat out of our singers to no avail with some.
The biggest surprise of the night? Sanjaya Malakar s Spanish vocal stylings with Besame Mucho. J-Lo was impressed and so was I, as scary as it is to admit.
Only seven potential idols left and more theme weeks to go. When s country week? That could get interesting.
Next week: Now that we re down to seven Idol -ers, it s about time to step out make a prediction for the top three contenders.
