weekdays through April 20 at Main Plaza this year it's actually at the San Fernando Portal entrance to the River Walk the Jazz Market features plenty of varied jazz.
Today, it'll be the swing and more of the Robert James Band. On Thursday, pianist, singer and songwriter Bett Butler will be in the Jazz Market spotlight.
Butler's song When Love Has Left the Room recently won first place in the jazz category in the Nashville-based 2006 International Song Competition. The song was produced by bassist Joel Dilley for Butler's upcoming Myths and Fables CD. Local and area jazz fans don't need a contest to know Butler has some great songs, but winning the prize can't hurt.
Luna also will have varied midweek jazz: Border Palace and Azul and Latin sounds Wednesday night, big band and salsa on Thursday courtesy of a pair of groups from Texas State University, the Texas State Big Band and Salsa del Rio. The Cove Wednesday night will feature John Magaldi and the Primetime Jazz Orchestra.

Singing songwriter Darden Smith, a first-class wordsmith who is comfortable doing everything from solo shows to collaborating with dance troupes to teaching kids how to make music, will be at Casbeers on Thursday.
Wednesday night at Casbeers, it's showcase/open-mike night with Claude Butch Morgan the Happy Camper Jammers and special guest Reverend Blues. Speaking of open mikes and jam sessions, Bro. Dave Rodriguez will front a Thursday open mike at the Koffee Kup.
The S.A. Blue Cats will front and back a blues jam on Thursday at Sam's Burger Joint.
Cito will play host to an open mike Wednesday night at the Red Room.

Both gatherings are benefits for the San Antonio Food Bank, so take those nonperishable food donations.
