American Idol: Sanjaya might win this thing

winning is a worst-case scenario for FOX. It would single-handedly undermine any credibility the show has as a legitimate venue for talent.

FOX, therefore, is in an interesting situation right now. Do they milk all this Sanjaya mania as long as possible and hope that voters eventually come to their senses? Or, do they try and guard against the possibility that he might actually win the whole thing, and try to bury him, PR-wise?

I don't know what FOX will do, but for those questions to even be relevant, we need to believe that Sanjaya has a chance to win American Idol this year.
The scary thing is, I actually believe this could happen.


Hear me out on this.

For my first piece of evidence, I point you to an article by my esteemed colleague Jon, who wrote a disturbing piece which cited an anonymous insider e-mail . I didn't believe it when I read it, but now it seems a hell of a lot more plausible.
I'll tell you why.

All you need to do is look at the bottom three contestants on tonight's results show. Sanjaya wasn't one of them. Normally, I'd say ldquo;So what?

There's no point looking for consistency in voting. rdquo; However, Sanjaya is clearly on a different playing field than anyone else on the show. Sure, was in the bottom two last week, but wasn't even in the bottom three this time around.

Therefore, one could make an argument that voting fluctuates significantly on a week to week basis. But, I think we can safely chalk up Chris's up-tick in votes to a greatly improved singing performance from last week to this week. We can't do the same with Sanjaya.

So, whereas all non-Sanjaya contestants are voted for in a somewhat fluid, quality-based manner, Sanjaya is not. It has gotten to the point where Sanjaya's performances are completely inconsequential. He has become a phenomenon unto himself and, if last night's abysmal performance can't enter him into the bottom three, nothing will.

There's one possibility that can bring some hope to those who want Sanjaya gone. As American Idol sheds more contestants, there will be less singers for those Sanjaya-haters to sprinkle their votes upon. This higher concentration of votes from the anti-Sanjaya camp could eventually send the boy wonder home.

But, who knows? If, a couple months from now, Sanjaya is joining and Jordin Sparks on stage for the American Idol finale, don't say I didn't warn you.
This is a tragedy!

Get this poor kid off the stage. I think it is a shame what we have come to in this country. People voting for the worst person for sake of entertainment, destroying this kid's self esteem and ruining it for actual contestants.

week after week i am amazed as to how this kid makes it thus far. has america gone crazy.

He should have been voted off a long time ago. the boy simply cant sing.

Perhaps the execs at American Idol will realize that something needs to be done in the way that a participant gets to stay on the show.

Perhaps there could be a vote where the only vote cast is for the weakest contestant to go home. Additionally, perhaps the judges will stop selecting these weak performers to make it to the top 24. If there are not 24 top candidates, then only select 20.

I agree.

He can't sing. All I can do is vote, vote, vote and pray that people will once again take American Idol seriously. There is a chance we could lose the show that we all love.

They won't keep pouring money into this show if they have end results like Sanjaya.
If Sanjaya wins that is the end of American Idol. Simon gave in interview where he said that.

The kid has to be a complete idiot seriously. He has to know he is horrible and doesn't belong on that stage. The judges can't do anything but laugh.

I like Sanjaya..He stands out in the idol team.

It is a shame that an underground element of kooks can take away a wonderful opportunity for truly talented performers to "get their chance", while at the same time taking away the enjoyment of millions of viewers.
sanjaya should win because he is awesome vote for him!

Yeh sure he makes for good entertainment.

I mean anytime you get to see somebody with no talent make an ass out of themselves it is always fun. He is the next William Hung. He isn't going to sell records though because he can't sing.

I don't think Fox will allow him to win though. It will be the end of the show and the judges won't come back. They will do whatever they can to make sure that doesn't happen.

It is a shame to let the public (little girls) keep voting for Sanjaya. He is not a singer nor cute. He is taking away from all the other contestants who deserve a shot.

Please get him disqualified.

It really does suck for the other contestants that actually have a shot of having a singing career.

When the show is over nobody will care about him. Honestly there have only been 2 successful American Idol seasons and that was when Kelly Carrie won. Chris and Jennifer didn't win but went on to have pretty good careers.

Maybe it is time for the show to come to an end or makes some changes so the real talent wins.

It doesn't matter what the judges say people will vote for him anyways. They sit there and laugh at him the whole time.

He is horrible and everybody knows it. Nobody in their right mind could actually think the kid has talent. If you really do than I will pay for you to go stay in the nut house because you need it.

I am just amazed and upset every week Sanjaya doesn't go home and instead singers with real talent do. Fox needs to change to competition so that the judges can decide to save somebody and send the other home, until the finale then let america decide like Rock star INXS and Supernova and also Grease you're the one that I want this was the judges would have a little more control than just relying on the young girls votes. It just makes me sick what is going on and want to see changes or I will quit watching the show all together.

I loved the fact that my parents hated Prince, I played him louder! They did the same with Elvis to their folks. More CONTROVERSY more fun.

AT THE END OF THE DAY, SIMON AND HIS PALS, RANDY AND PAULA, MADE A CHOICE THAT THE REST OF US ARE GOING TO HAVE TO LIVE WITH. And the bottom line is it's okay. The sad part could be Melinda or Blake actually losing to him, but we know they're the real winners with talent and they'll be finein the long run with great careers.

I wouldn't call him a star. He is only popular because he sucks and is making a joke of what is suppose to be a singing competition. This time next year he will be in the same place as William Hung, Jon Stevens, and that Kevin kid.

Unless he wins he won't get a record contract. Nobody will be talking about him after a few months. He will never be a STAR.

Sanjaya sucks we all know that. I think American Idol needs to have on line voting available so people who don't have time to to sit on the phone for hours pushing the redial button can have a chance to vote. A lot of other singing reality competitions provided on line voting why can't American Idol.

Oscar hopefully the law of averages will win out in weeks to come. Even teh VFTW and Minions of Stern are a limited number. Tonights telecast said there were 30 million plus votes.

The Stern Audience and VFTW Anti Idol fans have a limtied number of follower. Dedicated but limited. The one thing they have goign for them is the obessive compulsion to vote 100's of times each.

That factors into the mix. Those that want Sanjaya OUT will have to double their efforts to vote across the board mutiple times. The vote for yoru favortie system is flawed and may be scrapped next year to a VOTE off scenario.

Whatever the case Sanjaya and his Anti-Idol followers are putting a damper on this season. No way will they let Sanjaya win American Idol. They will keep him around awhile for the ratings but they won't let him ruin the show.

It is obvious Taylor shouldn't have won last year so they won't let somebody horrible win 2 years in a row.
I will not be watching anymore until Sanjaya is voted off. Sorry, but he never should have been in the top 12 to begin with.

I thought this was a show about being able to SING. Sanjaya may be a nice boy but his ride should have been over long ago.

I think what people are doing is so bad.

People who know how to sing are being sent home. It's a shame making Sanjaya think he is good enough to be in the top 10, 9, 8, or whatever. This is not what this competition is about.

I think this is total bull...

American Idol is supposed to be the best...

Your scenario is a factualy reality because numbers of voters has dropped dramaticaly this week. Nigel telling the world that the girl was crying for him reafirmed how poorly they think of true Idol viewers and that was a huge mistake. Worst's site is down and several more sprung up.

They are feeding there own problem.
I have been watching American Idol since its beginning. What an embarrassment it must be for the organizers of the show to see Sanjaya continue evry week.

This boy is not a good singer and a very poor performer at best. I am not sure that I will watch the show much longer if he is kept on. WHAT A JOKE.

You haven't heard? There's a big movement of people who vote for Sanjaya in an attempt to take down American Idol and destroy its credibility. I only know because I listen to Howard Stern, and he's a major factor in this, reminding people every day to participate.

It's not just him of course: there's a concerted effort amongst many bloggers as well. I don't watch American Idol so I don't care that much, but for those who were fans, my condolences.
Sanjaya is wothless and the under 12 crowd who waste their parents money texting their votes for this loser should be in bed or studying their fifth grade math.

VFTW and Stern have a valid point and unfortunately we the public are in the crossfire.

During auditions, Idol purposely eliminates great singers and lets bad ones through for our amusement and making good TV. The idea is to turn the tables on corporate American and see how they like it when the people turn their cash cow into a joke. It's a joke as long as Fox is doing it, but wrong when the average Joe does it?

I don't know what has happened to AI, used to be singers, now it is just about popularity. Think it about it, what happened to those powerful voices that used to rock the stage? You can barely hear the words to most of the singer now,,,,feed up.

The pathetic thing about this idiot is his performance this week was as if he knew he wouldn't be voted off so he sang like he did not give a shit.He's an insult to the rest of the contestants!

Actually, the Sanjaya thing has brought credibility to the show.

I used to think that the show had control over who was eliminated each week, especially when "my" contestant did not fare well. Because he is still there shows me that voting America IS in full control. As tempted as I am to stop watching all together, we would just be giving him the winning spot on AI.

Once the contestants dwindle down to the last few, it will be easier for those of us who vote for real talent to vote him off the show.
It is a sad day when people do not recognize real talent..

I was encouraged by my daughter to watch this program. I did.

The total lot of contestants has gone downhill for the past two seasons, with this one being the worst. But, you Idol junkies and purists take heart. Howard Stern is on vacation next week, so Sanjaya will likely not advance.

I think it is unfair to all the other hard-working contestants that Sanjaya is still in the competition. He has to know that he is an awful singer/dancer/performer.

This really is an interesting phenomenon. I used to be an avid fan of American Idol. I used to love to watch some of the amazing talent that made it into the top 12.

Something changed this season, and I stopped watching religiously when the craziness started with Sanjaya - and to be honest - I'm not inspired by any of them. That said, after reading Oscar's comments, I've decided to start voting again. I will vote for Sanjaya every week going forward.

..and hope that he wins this thing.

Only then will the show be forced to revamp the voting structure and the entire format. If he doesn't win, then all of those better singers that got voted off will have been in vain - and folks will have to endure additional seasons like this one in the future.

I don't think it is solely because he is the "worst" contestant left. I can't see him winning the whole thing. And I think it is way to early to discuss things like the producers of the show trying to disuade viewers from voting for him.

It is American Idol no? If America wants him to be the idol, so be it. Trying to tarnish his image would hurt the show way more than if he won.

It should be who the public wants to win, for whatever reason that may be. And I think if one of the best singers gets knocked out at this point, they can still have a strong career, even if Sanjaya wins.

This kid sucks so bad i can't believe it. He is a gay boy and everyone knows it too.

I think this internet stuff and Howard Stern wanting people to vote for the crappiest idol is retarded. I don't even want to watch anymore, but I have the hope that Mr. India might get ousted.

I can't believe he wasn't in the bottom three this past week. He just tries to be stupid every week now and do something to make him stand out. This year Idol already sucks and now this makes it worse.

How can the judges even let most of these people get this far. I sing karoake sometimes and I actually believe I can sing better than half of the people on idol. Anyway, I hope the standards get better because of this.

In the end it's all a beauty and popularity contest anyway. Lakisha and Melinda are the best singers, but as far as looks they are not Idol material
If you think about it, the powers that be won't switch the current voting system to that where you vote for the worst singer. Suppose that the system existed this year; there would be nothing to prevent diehard fans of a particular singer from unfairly targeting the obviously-talented ones like Melinda, simply to get rid of the strongest competition.

It's a shame that it has come to this. I thought that this was a show of talent. It has been apparent that Sanjaya cannot sing or just chooses not to, either way I find it very sad that true talent is being pushed to the side for this contestant.

Maybe if all the media hype died down maybe just maybe it would go back to actually being a SINGING contest. With all the slandering and critical comments it is only heightening the need for people to vote for him. I will keep watching and hoping that this comes back to a program that used to be excellent to watch.

One other note, its a shame that a shock jock like Howard Stern has such a hold on the American public and their voting.
When did it become a popularity contest instead of talent? It's gotten to the point where he is just trying to be annoying, you can tell by his expressions, he knows he's not going home!

Heh. Thought so. All you anti-Sanjaya whiners should direct your hatred towards the judges and producers for letting him even make it to the voting rounds.

Face it. Paula is a WORTHLESS judge, yet earns at least five million a year being mostly incoherent on national TV. Randy is an utter parody of himself, and hasn't got anything other than his lame "YO DAWG, IT WAS KINDA PITCHY" schtick; he's just as useless as Paula these days.

Simon is the only judge worth keeping.

What a big joke that would be. It will make fools of anyone who has a part in the show. Sanjaya should go home and take a good look in the mirror and ask himself if he wants to be a GIRL or a BOY.

If you ask me I think he is a girl trapped in a boys body.
