American Idol cut its first four contestants Thursday night, and while there is room for debate as to the merit of a couple of these eliminations, it really doesn't matter as all four of these people were pretty much doomed to extinction at some point. Paul Kim, Amy Krebs, Nicole Tranquillo, and Rudy Cardenas earned the distinction of being the first of the season to hear this year's boot song - Home by Idol 5's Chris Daughtry. And, of course, they each had one more chance to sing the song that got them eliminated in the first place.
Only Paul Kim showed obvious disappointment. Maybe he'd had a chance to watch the show back and knew that, while his performance was less than stellar, he was nowhere near as bad as some of them. And the truth is, the two people who really should have gone home - Sundance Head and Antonella Barba - were spared elimination, most likely to their having been anointed by the Web site Vote for the Worst (VFTW).
Not only did the site proclaim the pair as their picks for the week, they also posted photos of Antonella in a some rather girls gone wild type poses. I won't link them here (hint Google Vote for the Worst). All I can say is that someone really has a burn on for this Jersey girl!
To help ward off total boredom during the one-hour elimination show, Idol brought back season three's winner, Fantasia, who announced that she is taking on the lead role of Celie in the Broadway production of The Color Purple. She makes her debut April 10. Quincy Jones was also on hand to heap praises upon Ms.
Fantasia and she sang I'm Here from the show.
Ryan also announced the guest artists for the season. This list includes Diana Ross, Tony Bennett, Gwen Stefani, Jon Bon Jovi, Jennifer Lopez, Martina McBride, Barry Gibb, LuLu and Peter Noone.
The show also included a rousing group number with all 24 singing and posing in a grand display of ultra-cheesiness! It was, I believe, the first group number ever done with all 24 contestants.
I am not quite ready to make my predictions for the season, but I will say that I am excited about the potential for a showdown between two divas - Melinda Doolittle and Lakisha Jones.
I think the only thing that is going to save this season for me. But it's early yet!
The rumor is that Kellie Pickler will return next week to sing her latest single, I Wonder.
Ironic, isn't it, that last year at this time, I was bemoaning Kellie's inclusion in the top 24. Compared to some of those who are in this year's competition, Kellie is absolutely brilliant!
