B.C. superstar scoops five Junos

C.'s homegrown international pop superstar -- swooped into the Juno Awards Sunday night and walked away with an armload of five statuettes when the ceremonies were over.
The 28-year-old chart-topping singer descended on the awards show hanging from wires, wearing black patent leather, dramatic black feathers and a black tutu to kick off her hosting duties for the evening.


In between jokes and introductions, Furtado stepped up to the podium to accept the Juno awards for fan choice, single of the year for Promiscuous, and album of the year for Loose. (And on Saturday night, when the majority of the awards were presented, Furtado also won the artist and pop album of the year categories, bringing her total to five awards.)

-based musicians who found themselves making victory speeches.
Among the West Coast winners were Swollen Members, who won best rap recording for Black Magic. Diana Krall won best vocal jazz album for From this Moment On.


Jim Byrnes won best blues album for House of Refuge.
Furtado and rock group Billy Talent were the only artists to win multiple Junos. Tied with Furtado with five nominations, Billy Talent won group of the year and rock album of the year for its recording Billy Talent II.


The rock album win may represent a changing of the guard, as Billy Talent took the category over long-time Canadian favourite The Tragically Hip.
K-os, the hip-hop artist who also garnered five nominations, was shut out, as was Quebec sensation Gregory Charles, who played host to the Saturday night awards. Charles had three nominations, for fan choice, album and artist of the year.


Other also-rans included Nickelback, which lost the fan choice award to Furtado; and Three Days Grace, up for album and group of the year.
New artist of the year went to Tomi Swick, who released Stalled In the Doorway in 2006. Swick's star began to rise when he recorded an EP for Warner Music; it sold more than 100,000 copies in Canada, cultivating a fan base before he released his first album.


The R B/soul recording of the year went to jacksoul, the stage name of Haydain Neale, who released the CD mySoul in 2006. Neale won the category over Keshia Chante, George, Deesha and Karl Wolf.
Furtado is no stranger to the winner's circle, having won four previous Junos.

She may have been the hardest-working star on the Sunday night broadcast, serving as host, performer, and being called to accept awards three times.
It has been a huge year for Furtado. After almost a year on the U.

S. sales charts, Furtado's third album, Loose, sits at No. 7, with worldwide sales past the two-million mark.

The Timbaland-produced effort has earned platinum or gold sales certifications in more than 25 countries, including Canada, where it has sold more than 400,000 copies.
The Sunday awards show was also a busy one for Billy Talent, which also performed. The band recently returned from Germany, where their albums reached platinum status.


Their four-song EP, Try Honesty, provided their first taste of national success and led them to signing in 2002 with Atlantic Records and Warner Music Canada. In 2003, the band released its full-length self-titled album, Billy Talent, which featured three singles, including Try Honesty, that went No. 1 on the Canadian charts.


The band found critical success as well, winning a 2004 Juno award for best new group and 2005 Junos for group of the year and album of the year.
Only seven awards were presented on the live show Sunday evening. Thirty-two awards were presented Saturday night at a gala event.
