The renowned New York-based Vanguard Jazz Orchestra is coming to Detroit for one night only. The 16-person jazz orchestra will bring their Big Band swing and bebop sound to the Orchestra Hall stage at the Max M. Fisher Music Center on Friday, April 20 at 8 p.

m. as part of the DSO's LaSalle Bank Paradise Jazz Series.

An illustrious ensemble, the orchestra's 2004 recording titled "The Way - Music of Slide Hampton," won a Grammy Award for best arrangements for jazz orchestra.

In March of 2006, the group released a recording of works by its resident pianist, composer and arranger Jim McNeely to more critical acclaim. One of the driving forces behind the longevity and artistic excellence of this ensemble is a commitment to the original Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra sound. The creativity and experimentation of the band's founders and original performers continues to be a treasured tradition.

The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra's history began in 1966 when cornetist, composer and arranger Thad Jones and drummer Mel Lewis founded a band in New York: the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra. Jones and Lewis, along with many of their colleagues, needed an outlet for their creative energies and relief from the tedium of studio work. With a handful of arrangements they approached legendary club owner Max Gordon and were booked at the Village Vanguard for three Mondays in February.

Critical acclaim, awards and international success followed.
In 1979, tired of frequent traveling and the economic uncertainty that even great jazz musicians endure in America, Jones left the band to accept leadership of the Danish Radio Orchestra in Copenhagen. Lewis decided to continue the band now billed as Mel Lewis and the Jazz Orchestra and enlisted the talents of his old friend and former band member, Bob Brookmeyer.

The band not only survived, but with Brookmeyer's writing, continued the innovation and influence that Jones and Lewis had begun. Brookmeyer also eventually moved on to other projects and settled in Europe. In 1990, the band would endure a terrible blow when Mel Lewis died after a five year battle with cancer.

In recent years, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, through its non-profit organization Sixteen as One Music Inc., has been exploring, developing and implementing new initiatives to provide access to a diverse audience. Through community and educational outreach, the band offers residencies, master classes and jazz clinics to colleges and high schools, reaching out to under-served audiences through community concerts, and developing programs to introduce young people to various aspects jazz music, history and culture.

The orchestra's commitment to education has also led to the development of the JazzEd - Cultural Access Initiative. The orchestra serves as a creative outlet for some of the nation's foremost performers, composers and arrangers.
In the 2006-07 season, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra performances in the U.

S include the University of Arizona, Michigan State University, Kansas State University, the Orange County Performing Arts Center, the University of Massachusetts and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
