Stephen Marley is obviously in no hurry to follow in his father's footsteps. Although he has been in the music biz for years as a producer, songwriter and former member of brother Ziggy's Melody Makers, Mind Control is the first solo album from reggae icon Bob Marley's second son. In some ways, the apple does not fall far from the tree.
As soon as the thirtysomething vocalist opens his mouth, it's obvious he's a chip off the old block -- his plaintive Jamaican-tinged vocals, soaring melodies and Rastaman spirituality sound eerily, uncannily like his late father. By contrast, though, the contemporary hip-hop grooves, poppy production and lineup of guests like Mos Def and Ben Harper on these 11 lightweight reggae-pop cuts make it just as clear that Marley is also his own man on his own artistic path.
