It's been fifteen years since Phil Collins played drums for the British rock band Genesis and now, following in the footsteps of bands like , Crowded House, Rage Against the Machine, Smashing Pumpkins and , Genesis are back together once again. To mark the occasion, Genesis announced the North American leg of their upcoming tour on Thursday.
According to
The Associated Press, the newly reformed Genesis released their North American tour dates for their "Turn It on Again" tour, which will kick off in Toronto on September 7, 2007.
Other locations on the thirteen-date tour include Boston, Montreal, Hartford, Conn., Philadelphia, Columbus, Ohio, Washington, East Rutherford, N.J.
, Cleveland, Detroit, Chicago, San Jose, and L.A., which wraps the Genesis tour on October 12, 2007.
After returning to the group fifteen years later, drummer Phil Collins, who went on to have a successful solo career, mentioned that the reunion had nothing to do with money. "I think we are all loaded enough not to worry about where the next million or two is coming from. I just felt now was the right time to have a go at it.
"
New York Daily News reports that while band members Mike Rutherford, Tony Banks, Anthony Phillips, and Phil Collins will be taking to the stage once again, founding member and lead singer Peter Gabriel will not be joining the rest of the crew. It seems that Gabriel declined an invitation to go out on the road again with Genesis, but that doesn't mean he won't be involved in future projects with the band. Phil Collins told the media, "
It's not like it's a party that we're holding that Peter didn't come to."
The Toronto Star writes that when Genesis reaches Toronto, they will perform in a brand new stadium, the BMO Field soccer pitch at Exhibition Place. The band gave an online news conference yesterday to announce that Toronto would be their first stop on the North American tour and lead singer Phil Collins revealed that even after leaving the group in 1991, they've all stayed good friends. "
We're still great friends, you know, and we've been great friends since I left the band. We've talked about it all the time, every time we've met to do something, and now is as good a time as any."
Aside from the great news that Genesis has picked Toronto as the starting point, some worry that the new BMO field is still untested as a concert venue and memories of the terrible acoustics at SkyDome, now the Rogers Center, when it first opened. Whether the field will be suitable or not when it opens on April 28 to kick-off the Toronto FC's inaugural season shouldn't matter to the band, as they won't be arriving in town until September, which is more than enough time to iron out any kinks in the acoustics.
Genesis are a British rock band that was formed in 1967 and who have gone on to sell more than 150 million albums worldwide, making them one of the top 30 highest selling artists of all time. Genesis have 20 studio albums with 6 of them going to number 1 in the UK and include,
