Seeing PBJ live is like stepping into a deliciously intoxicating, Swedish timewarp.
Last night at The Metro was the best gig I ve seen so far this year (along with Joanna Newsom- she s in a different category of her own however) as the boys from totally made me fall in love with them all over again. Writer s Block was one of my top 3 albums last year but I wasn t expecting an action packed rock show.
I was pleasantly surprised at their ability to play rock music, their amazing energy on stage and their awesome jamming session at the end of the main set.
I didn t even really know what they looked like and was also pleasantly surprised that they weren t so hard on the eyes either.
The boys really know how to play their instruments, enjoy every moment of playing live and evoke something from the 60 s.
I can t put my finger on it but Peter especially reminds me of some old 60 s movie star as he makes love to the audience with his whistling and infectious voice. He is almost James Bondesque.
Bjorn smiles the whole show and laughs at the audience.
last time we visited the Metro and last night, I had mine with Bjorn. During Big Black Coffin there was some audience participation required and I m not even sure what I was doing, but for some reason he pointed at me and then smiled and laughed as I was singing along. So now, Sean and I are even.
He got a smiley Aussie red stockinged starlet, I got a smiley Swedish tight panted bass player.
The only disappointment of the night was the performance of my favourite track off Writer s Block, Amsterdam.
First Rule of Long Awaited Gigs- Never build up the first hearing of a song because there is always the chance that it won t be played or they ll do a weird version.
Last night we got the latter. They asked for us to be silent, as had been done in Hobart, yet the Sydney crowd didn t comply. It was done simply with Peter on guitar, with both boys singing as John watched from the drums.
It was still good, but just not what I was expecting.
I had a ball dancing around at the front of the stage, the energy was incredible. They are great musicians, the music is infectious and they aren t so bad to look at.
I ll be seeing them again tomorrow at Laneway and I can t wait. Check them out if you are going!
hmm, i m really not sure about PBJ, ther s something about them that really tick me off!
maybe it s the damn whistling. :)
