Smashing Pumpkins and Björk will headline the second annual Virgin Festival in Toronto later this year.
The festival, staged by Virgin Mobile Canada, takes place Sept. 8 and 9 on Toronto Island.
Other acts scheduled to rock the event are The Killers, Interpol, Paolo Nutini, Amy Winehouse, Tokyo Police Club and Jamie T. As many as 30 other acts will be announced in the weeks to come. “We always focus on making Virgin Festival much more than just a concert,” said Andrew Bridge, director of Virgin Festivals, Virgin Mobile Canada, in a release.
“With heavyweight acts like The Killers and indie favourites like Interpol, we’re going to take the momentum from last year’s success and ...
create an even more unique entertainment experience.”
Two-day passes are $125 plus $1.00 for the Virgin Unite charity and $12 for ferry transportation to the event.
Vancouver is also staging a Virgin Festival this year, featuring headliners The Killers, My Chemical Romance, AFI, and Billy Talent.
The May 20-21 festival will be held at Thunderbird Stadium on the campus of the University of British Columbia.
Other acts scheduled to perform in Vancouver are Rise Against, Thursday, Stars of Track and Field, Jets Overhead, Pride Tiger, The Junction, Hot Hot Heat, Metric, Smoosh, Mother Mother, Illscarlett, Sebastien Grainger et les Montagnes and The Reason.
Virgin Festivals in both cities will include an interactive V-Village with vendors, food, hair stylists, tattoo artists and massage services.
Last year’s inaugural Toronto festival featured acts like The Raconteurs, The Strokes, Alexis on Fire, Gnarls Barkley, Muse, Sam Roberts and The Flaming Lips. Headliner Massive Attack pulled out due to Customs problems.
In the UK, where the V Festival has been an annual event since 1996, more than 130,000 fans flock to two locations.
Similar festivals were added to several U.S. cities last year.
This year’s V Festival in England, scheduled for Aug. 18 and 19, includes The Killers, Foo Fighters, Goo Goo Dolls, Pink, Damien Rice and Snow Patrol.
