The common complaint about Oscar fashion choices of the past few years is that stars played it too safe. Not so this year.
With the taxman cracking down on those five-digit goody bags and questioning the legality of "gifting" designer dresses tax-free, one Oscar night tradition remains alive and, more important, IRS-sanctioned: The lending of the jewels.

Many women age 50 and beyond aren't ready to be dignified. You couldn't drag them kicking and screaming into a caftan with a big artistic necklace. They don't want to be Diana Vreelandized.

They just want fresh, cute, snappy clothes that don't show too much.

Last year, the strapless "pick-up" dress, that bouffant show-off, out-bustled almost every other bridal gown. It continues but in many more variations, and it has rivals: sexy mermaid shapes, including a fresh one that fits like a swimsuit and flares from the hip, are making waves while A-line gowns offer a discreet alternative.

Long buffet lines and seated dinners are out at wedding receptions. Couples are now opting for several action stations where food preparation becomes part of the entertainment.
