LONDON, March 12 (UPI) -- A British online music download service appears to have jumped the gun in touting the imminent availability of the Beatles' song book.
A news release headline dated this Wednesday posted on Wippit's Web site Monday read, "The Beatles available for download on Wippit." But the full text of the release was unavailable.
The record company EMI, which controls distribution of the Fab Four's music, told the BBC that the headline was untrue and has asked Wippit to remove it.
Representatives for the download site could not be reached for comment.
EMI is thought to be close to releasing the Beatles' catalog as digital downloads.
But for now, anyway, the Beatles remain the last major act to withhold its song archive from online music stores such as iTunes and Napster.
