The St. Louis levee will come alive again this summer with 12 evenings of free concerts and fireworks: a two-day Fair St. Louis and five weekends of Live on the Levee.

Celebrate St. Louis chief Missy Slay is not ready to announce the lineup, but her cousin, St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay, recently tipped off a group of downtown residents that '80's icon Cyndi Lauper, alternative songwriter Ani DiFranco, Texas rock trio Los Lonely Boys and country great Emmylou Harris are among the artists who may play the series.

Harris' website says the Grammy winner will perform here July 7. Missy Slay hopes to name Fair St. Louis artists and other attractions later this month.

I said it last year, she said, and I'll say it again: What other city offers this sort of free entertainment for 12 nights? Fair St. Louis will run from 6-10 p.

m. July 3 and 11 a.m.

-10 p.m. July 4 on Leonor K.

Sullivan Boulevard. The 130th annual Veiled Prophet Parade will step off downtown at 10 a.m.

July 4. Last year, Celebrate St. Louis scaled back fair hours and elmininated air shows to finance the $3 million summerlong party.

Organizers will take a similar tack this year, Slay said. Live on the Levee will run from July 6 through Aug. 4 on Friday and Saturday evenings.

It again will feature a family fun village, food from local restaurants and a 20-minute fireworks show. Eats Bridge, however, has been axed. Last year, vendors complained that few people ventured onto Eads Bridge for food and local music.

This will be the fourth summer that a free concert series has been staged on the riverfront. Last year, hundreds of thousands of revelers enjoyed concerts by India.Arie, Live, Toad the Wet Sprocket with Big Head Todd the Monsters, and Morris Day and the Time.
