Loretta Lynn is truly one of the most successful classic country singers of all time. She dominated the charts during the 60’s 70’s, stacking up over 70 hits as a solo performer and duet partner. Loretta Lynn was a coal miner’s daughter as told by her song, born in Butcher Hollow, Kentucky in 1935, and she sang as a child for the church and at local concerts.
In January 1949, at 13 years of age, she married Oliver Lynn. The couple raised 4 children. In the mid-70’s Lynn published her autobiography, Coal Miner’s Daughter, and in 1980, the book was adapted for the screen, becoming one of the year’s most critically acclaimed and successful films.
In 2004, Lynn teamed up with White Stripes guitarist Jack White and released Van Lear Rose, which was met with both surprise and awe. The album quickly became popular and Lynn embarked on tour to support it. Van Lear Rose won two Grammy Awards, including best country album in 2005 Known as the Godfather of soul and one of the most influential singers of the 20th century, James Brown had an enormous impact on rhythm and blues and soul, and all but single handedly created funk.
On December 25th, Christmas Day, 2006, James Brown died in Atlanta Georgia after being hospitalized for pneumonia. Dubbed "the hardest-working man in show business," James Brown’s earthly persona will be sorely missed by all who loved his music, but his legacy will live on through a brand new generation’s sampling of his songs which provide the essence and core of Funk and R B and serve as numerous background grooves for today’s hip hop music.
