m., Penn Museum and Museum Catering Company present an "Extreme Beer Dinner," a reception and three course dinner offered in the Museum's Lower Egyptian gallery and featuring some of Michael Jackson's selections of fine beers. Mr.

Jackson, author of The Great Beer Guide, and the Pocket Guide to Beer, has selected beers branded “extreme” for their exotic flavors and power to thrill taste buds. Dinner reservations are $75; Museum members, $60. For reservations, call 215/898-4890.

Then, on Saturday, March 10, the visit continues with the 17th Annual Beer Tastings with Michael Jackson. This year's event, entitled "Extreme Beer,” examines what makes a beer extreme. In recent years brewers have focused on various tastes, components, and alcohol levels and created extreme beers.

Michael Jackson’s tutored lineup will focus on some of the best examples of extreme beers available today. Guests taste brews in formal tastings with commentary by Mr. Jackson.

Also attending is Sam Calagione, founder and president of Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, brewer of distinctive beers and Midas Touch Golden Elixir--an alcoholic beverage inspired by Penn Museum's own archaeochemical research, by Patrick McGovern, on ancient vessels excavated at the famous site of Gordion in Turkey. Mr. Calagione’s new book, Extreme Brewing, will also be available at the event.

Each tutored session is followed by a general tasting, presented in the Museum's majestic Chinese Rotunda, of additional microbrews from the U.S. and around the world, and complemented with foods from Museum Catering Company.

Participants can sign up for one of three separate seatings at 1 p.m., 3:30 p.

m., and 6 p.m.

Advance reservations are required for both programs, and attendees must be at least 21 years old.

Internationally recognized as the leading writer on beers of the world, Michael Jackson’s numerous book titles have been published in 15 languages. His television series, "The Beer Hunter," took him on a worldwide tour of historic breweries. He is a Director at Large of the North American Guild of Beer Writers, and was founding Chairman of the similar Guild in Britain.

Mr. Jackson is regarded as one of the fathers of the renaissance of interest in beer worldwide, and especially of the North American micro-brewery movement, which he has been covering since its beginnings in the mid-1970s. -- www.
