[img] Kudos to whoever birthed this concept, it's a really great idea and ideal for all the dedicated music fans who can't justify a week-long trip to Austin every year. That being said, RFC is actually making the pilgrimage to SXSW this year, so keep it here next week for possible updates during the festival and (the more likely scenario) a post-fest wrap up the following week.

[img] Regrettably I always seem to forget about WRTE-FM, better known as Radio Arte .

Granted, the station pumps out less than 100 watts and doesn't reach much beyond its home in Pilsen, but that's not a good excuse since the station has a great website and a decent quality audio stream. And no, I'm not fluent in Spanish, but a majority of WRTE's programming during the day is English or bilingual and they really put together a great mix of music. As expected during their Latin Alternative [.

[img] As strong as this week's new releases are, May is also shaping up to be a great month for highly anticipated new records. Last week, Wilco, Bjork, The National, and Voxtrot all officially confirmed new releases for May. Icelandic princess Bjork drops her follow-up to 2004's Medulla with a new record titled Volta.

Björk duets with Antony (from Antony and the Johnsons fame), and collaborates with Timbaland, and Konono N°1. No matter who contributes to the record, you know it's going to be pretty weird. [.

com proclaims, " Here it is; the biggest release of 2007 from the biggest band in the world. Arcade Fire’s “Neon Bible” is a grandly orchestrated explosion of pop wonderment. There is no sophomore jinx .

" Not so sure about "the biggest band in the world," but it's certainly one of the most anticipated sophomore records in quite some time. However, it's far from the only thing of note on store shelves this week. Check out the full list of heavyweights after the jump.

[img] It’s not that I’m in love with Rob Dickinson exactly but there really is something special about him. Although I became a Catherine Wheel fan in high school, I was never able to see and hear him perform with his bandmates, which is regrettable. Suffice it to say that if you are a fan of Catherine Wheel, seeing Rob Dickinson playing solo with mainly just his acoustic guitar and at times a harmonica is something to really be treasured.

[img] This was my second [...

[img] Oh those lovely 1900's!

In the two Monday nights I attended out of four the band played last month as part of their Schuba's residency, we were treated to a night backed by strings, new songs, a few remarkable covers and a theremin. All that was left was to ponder was what could I have been thinking to miss the first two Monday's. Nothing could have been more sensible than basking in the radiant glow of the 1900's.

[img] Saturday marks the first of two total lunar eclipses that will occur this calendar year and it will actually be the first one since 2004 that will be visible here in Chicago. According to the Adler Planetarium, Moonrise will occur at 5:39 pm on Saturday, at which point the Moon will already be eclipsed by the Earth's shadow. Don't be late in checking out the skies, as totality ends at 5:58 and the partial phase ends at 7:11 pm.

So, in honor of this stunning phenomenon, RFC is providing your [...

[img] Musically, I've always had a bit of a penchant for the downtempo and morose. In college, I had a radio show called "Pump Up the Valium" where I played a healthy dose of bands like Portishead, Low and Air. A few years later, I resurrected the show late nights on WLUW and dove even further into the realm of dark and obscure electronic music.

That show was called "Halcyon Nights" (inspired by the Orbital song, "Halcyon On and On") and my plan was always to relaunch it here on Radio Free Chicago. Inspiration to [..

[img] A little calm before the storm this week as we await some hugely anticipated records from the likes of !!

!, Arcade Fire, Air, RJD2 and The Stooges next Tuesday. However, all is not lost, as this slow release day gives me even more of an excuse to hype up the latest relase from personal favorites of mine, Dean Britta .

Former Galaxie 500 and Luna frontman Dean Wareham just keeps on brilliantly reinventing himself, and his former Luna co-hort turned wife Britta Phillips has become the perfect Bardot-like muse to Dean's mellow [...

[img] It’s been a long time since the world has glimpsed Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse on stage. After six years, he has put finally put out another album, Dreamt For Light Years in the Belly of a Mountain, swelling with an amazing supporting cast ranging from Tom Waits to Danger Mouse. Not only are the high quality songs on this newest release in the same vain as in the greatly loved 2001 release It’s a Wonderful Life, but they also hold up just as well and demonstrate how a man [.
