Junior Boys, Metric, Final Fantasy Rekindle Stars' Fire
Plus: Kevin Drew, Apostle of Hustle, Dears, Russian Futurists, Stills, Montag, Young Galaxy Now we loved 2004 LP just fine as it was, a lush palette of heartfelt heartbreak anthems. But we ve got to admit, this sounds pretty damn cool: whilst we await the Fire followup (due in fall 2007, if you trust the band s website), Stars have invited a cadre of Friends to recreate the Canadian pop romantics best LP to date.
Do You Trust Your Friends?

( waaaay back in June 2005 and last summer) arrives May 22 on and is a track-for-track renovation (thus deemed by the press release) of Set Yourself on Fire. The Friends in question? A fairly trustworthy lot, many of them A C affiliates: Junior Boys, Metric, Final Fantasy, Broken Social Scene s Kevin Drew (with Camouflage Nights) and Apostle of Hustle, the Dears, the Russian Futurists, the Stills, Minotaur Shock, Montag, Young Galaxy, Jason Collett, and the Most Serene Republic.

Each takes a stab at a Fire favorite, sequenced exactly the same as the original album (with those dastardly Dears breaking album centerpiece What I m Trying to Say into a two-part mega-jam). You can still check out Junior Boys reworking of Sleep Tonight over in .
Stars themselves, meanwhile, have been feverishly working on their follow-up to Set Yourself On Fire, according to their website, at Vancouver s Warehouse Studios.

In related news, Stars swings down to SXSW in support of last year s solo foray, . And she s hardly the only Star off in sideprojectland: Torquil Campbell s dropped last year in Canada. That album finally gets a U.

S. release March 27 via Montreal s .
Plus: Willie Nelson, Roger McGuinn of the Byrds Sorry, Adam Duritz.

You don t get to be . But guess what? In Velvet Goldmine/Far From Heaven director Todd Haynes forthcoming feature I m Not There, six other people do-- including Richard Gere, Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, and even Cate Blanchett.

Each plays a Dylan of a different period in the experimental flick, presently in post-production and tentatively slated for release later this year.
A lot of fine folks who aren t playing Dylan get to do the next best thing-- cover the man s timeless songs for the film s soundtrack. While details have not yet been completely confirmed, we do know , , and -- with , , and the Byrds -- are among the acts giving it the old Dylan try.

According to Rollingstone.com, Stephen Malkmus takes on Dylan s Maggie s Farm and Ballad of a Thin Man -- with Dylan bandmember Tony Garnier in his band and Sonic Youth s Lee Ranaldo in the producer s chair. Judging from a post on the Malkmus website, it seems the indie icon s cover will appear in the film itself with an actor mouthing the words: Maybe we arent supposed to talk about this too much.

but one of our favorite movie stars inhabits senor jick s voice to perfection, claims the Malkmus site.
The Hold Steady, meanwhile, take on B-side Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window? , according to a post on sound engineer s website (intense high five to reader Kaley Evans for the tip!

). Mustachioed Hold Steady keyboardist confirmed the band s participation in I m Not There on his own website.
Calexico contribute a rendition of Street Legal s Se or (Tales of Yankee Power) , joined by folk legend Willie Nelson and flamenco guitarist Salvador Duran.

The band performed and briefly discussed their cover on Minnesota Public Radio last September. Check out the video .
Finally, in an August 2006 with The Daily Californian, Joey Burns of Calexico mentioned My Morning Jacket s Jim James had lent vocals to another Calexico-backed I m Not Here Dylan cover (apparently set to appear in a Richard Gere scene), and that Calexico had recorded tracks for Roger McGuinn for a third soundtrack contribution.

Contrary to early reports, Jack White will not be participating, according to his publicist. Other rumored participants include PJ Harvey, Aimee Mann, and Michael Stipe.

Exclusive: Contest held to determine final compilation contributor!

When co-leader Grant McLennan unexpectedly last May, the music world mourned the loss of a dear family member, a friend, and a brilliant, intuitive songwriter. For anyone who had been touched by Grant s music over the last 30 years, it was like losing someone very close.
While never quite a commercial smash, Australia s Go-Betweens nonetheless etched an enduring legacy, charming critics and fans alike with warm, thoughtful pop songwriting.

Seeking to pay tribute to Grant and his extraordinary music, Go-Betweens superfans David James Buckner and wife Sherri decided to compile a fitting tribute album.
Love Goes On collects exclusive covers of Go-Betweens favorites and Grant McLennan solo tunes from artists who count Grant and his oeuvre as a profound influence. It should hit shops in early September via David and Sherri s own label and will feature liner notes penned by The Big Takeover s Jack Rabid.

Confirmed contributors include the Clientele, Portastatic, Brookville (aka Ivy s Andy Chase), kiwi rock stalwarts the Bats, Sarah Records graduates the Orchids, Bobby Wratten s post-Field Mice project Trembling Blue Stars, Belle Sebastian collaborator Future Pilot AKA, and ex-Auteurs/Black Box Recorder gent Luke Haines. Other likely participants include Ivy (re-working their cover of Streets of Your Town , originally from the Guestroom LP) and Church frontman and McLennan s Jack Frost partner Steve Kilbey (tackling The Wrong Road ).
Hear comp selections from Portastatic, the Orchids, and more at the label s .

As David told Pitchfork via e-mail, We have been incredibly pleased and heartened to see the enthusiasm with which this project has been embraced by artists of various cultures and epochs.
But wait-- there s room for one more! Due to a last-minute cancellation, Rare Victory is seeking one final contributor for Love Goes On, to cover title track Love Goes On!

(originally released on the Go-Betweens 1988 LP 16 Lovers Lane). Interested parties should shoot an mp3 of their entry to no later than March 29, 2007. The label will choose a winner on the basis of originality, melodicism, and sound quality.

Bear in mind that all entrants, while retaining ownership of their songs, agree to keep them exclusive to Love Goes On for at least 12 months from the release date. Fair enough, why not give it a whirl? will soon for that great big record store in the sky (where they have everything on vinyl), but not before treating discerning audiences to one last left-of-center indie gem-- and this one might as well be the Hope Diamond.

On April 10, the KRS-affiliated imprint hits us with Remixed and Covered, a massive two-disc set packed with, you guessed it, remixes and covers of songs.
On disc one, Sunset Rubdown take on A Promise s Apistat Commander , avant-hoppers Why? do The Air Force s devastating closer, Wig Master , and melancholic folkie Marissa Nadler makes Fabulous Muscles jam Clowne Towne her own.

Devendra Banhart s cover of Support Our Troops OH! (originally released on a ) crops up again here as well.
Alas, Tu Mi Piaci covers EP stars Pussycat Dolls do not return Xiu Xiu the favor.

Disc two boasts remixes from the likes of loop-happy Creepshow partner Grouper, slice n dicer Kid606, like-minded shrieker This Song Is a Mess but So Am I, club MC/producer Gold Chains, boundary-pushers To Live and Shave in L.A., and Xiu Xiu themselves.

Remixed and Covered is one of approximately 92 Xiu Xiu-related releases due this year. Others include the reprise of XXL, Xiu Xiu s collaboration with Italy s Larsen, whose Spicchiologi? drops May 29 via Important; the follow-up to award-winner The Air Force, which features a duet with Michael Gira; side projects with Deerhoof s John Dieterich and This Song Is a Mess; and a video collection and tour DVD.

That DVD should be available this spring, when, somehow, Xiu Xiu will find time for a month-long (be on the lookout for another as well). And! Perhaps inspired by all that Neon Bible toll-free hoopla, Xiu Xiu have set up their own hotline , which you may dial up to hear effed-up, mostly indecipherable messages.

We don t mean to lionize, but is one happening dude.

A dude s dude. When he isn t , doing punk-rock Pilates, or killing raccoons with his ear-to-ear smile, Leo s hopscotching across the continent, mulling the plight of the opening band, and beefing up his LP with bonus disc that includes a Chumbawumba cover. And it s not even Tubthumping !

Believe it: when Leo and the Pharmacists debut Living With the Living goes live March 20, the first pressing edition will come bundled with a free five-song bonus EP. Said article collects new tunes Ted put to tape in December 2006 at Brooklyn s Wild Frontier Studios-- including a cover of the Wumba s pre-fame non-hit Rappaport s Testament: I Never Gave Up (from 1990 s Slap!)-- and one of those oh-so-cool hidden tracks (so actually, a six-song bonus EP).

Vinyl hounds needn t fret: initial LP pressings will include a coupon to download the entire album in digital format, and the bonus disc too, all for the price of that bandwidth you re stealing from your neighbors.
And that s not all: Leo takes centerstage in the , up now on the imprint s . Watch Leo discuss why he loves his new label and why new bands have it bad, then stick around for a Leo/Pharmacists live rendition of new jam The Sons of Cain from last September s celebration.

Don t forget to swoon at Leo s regular-guy valediction, a gruff ANKS e rybuddy. No, dude, thank you.
Finally, , Mr.

Leo and company cut rugs across North America beginning this March. If you ve had the almighty, mental-thrashing pleasure of listening to s epic jam, Sheets of Easter , you might find it hard to believe that six cassette tapes chock-full of covers of the almost-15-minute, riff-happy song will soon see the light of day.
On February 1, delivers the first volume of their Sheets of Easter Everywhere singles club.

The Austin/Chicago-based label has assembled tons of choice acts, including Parts Labor, Jana Hunter, and DJ Sony Playstation, for the first installment-- and they all pay tribute to that beautiful beast from 2002 s Each One Teach One. Check out Parts Labor s hypnotic take on Sheets of Easter in mp3 form below.
Over the course of the year, Furniture will unleash the rest of the six volumes (one every other month), featuring such indie luminaries as Excepter, Jason Forrest, Pit Er Pat, BARR, Genghis Tron, AIDS Wolf, Pterodactyl, Best Fwends, All City Affairs, and Plastic Crimewave Sound, just to name a few.

Act fast if you want a copy, though: each volume will have a limited release of 300. Sign up for the singles club (details ), and you ll get each new tape as soon as it s released, as well as a nifty handmade book featuring thoughts on the project from the artists involved.
If you want to know how someone could ever hazard to cover Sheets of Easter in under a minute (because both Oh, Beast!

and the Coke Dares do it on the first volume), here s your chance. And if you re not quite sure what a cassette tape is, fret singles club signees will also receive the tunes in CD form with the tapes and the book. + The Band = the sadness.

Ben Gibbard slathers his sappy voice on this deep cut from the Band s self-titled second album (where it was called Rockin Chair ); the resulting DCFC hit-and-run is set to appear on the forthcoming Endless Highway Band tribute compilation, out via on January 30.
It s a shame that Death Cab don t do much more with this song than make it sound like a Transatlanticism B-side, and Gibbard s disinterested lullaby croon does no justice to the lived-in feel of a song with the lyric, I m pushing age 73. Even more depressing: the other songs on Endless Highway.

Our pals over at had the rather brilliant idea of soliciting folks like and to perform the unlikeliest of covers for their forthcoming CMG Fantasy Podcast Vol. 1 . And yes, by some devilish machinations, they managed to get the latter to cover Justin Timberlake s SexyBack -- you know, the one that divided the JT ranks until My Love sailed in and brought everybody together again.

Slowing things down to a trot, pulling out some woozy horns for the second verse, and wisely dumping all of Timbaland s bridge-barking, RPC imbues what was a sleazy come-on track with the same sense of foreboding that colors much of the Pitchfork Or consider it this way: if Timberlake s beckoning you back to his place for a little whoopy-makin , RPC s Chris Eaton sounds like he s luring you back for some serial killin . Yikes.
Plus you can practically see him rolling his eyes as he spouts quips like V.

I.P. and Look at those hips.

CMG kindly lent us the track to share with y all, so have a listen by clicking below.
The covers podcast goes live next week. Swing over to then to check out SexyBack , along with Broughton covering Cat Power s The Greatest , new Anticon signing SJ Esau doing (God help us) another cover of Crazy , Ned Collette taking on TV on the Radio s Hours , Shugo Tokumaru handling Peter Bjorn and John s Young Folks and Daniel Johnston s To Go Home , and offbeat selections from the Red Giants, Monster Bobby, Flying Lotus, Emperor X, and more surprises.

Sufjan, Witmer Are Friends of Rosie Thomas alert! Our banjo-plucking, States- songwriting, stealer of hearts hooked up (in a purely musical sense, you gutter-dwellers!) with pals and in New York earlier this year to record a batch of songs by Rosie, who sought to escape the pressures of worldwide fame and acclaim and make music the old-fashioned, on-the-fly, inspired way.

Seems these sessions proved fruitful enough to warrant the release of an album, Rosie s fourth, titled These Friends of Mine. It s out now in digital format and should have a physical release in March 2007, courtesy of Rosie s own label, Sing-a-Long Records, partnered with . Sufjan sings backing vocals and plays instruments on a number of These Friends ten tracks, which include covers of R.

E.M. s The One I Love , Fleetwood Mac s Songbird , and Witmer s own Paper Doll .

Best of all, you can stream a pair of songs from Rosie s new disc right now at her and : Much Farther to Go , which features a prominent Sufjan backing vocal, and Kite Song , an innocuous ballad touched with strings and piano. They re pretty coffeeshop-ripe and a bit Jesus-y, which is great if you re into those things. Even if you re not, you may enjoy them for their pleasant nature and competent arrangements and production.

And because you love all things Sufjan. Admit it, you do. Wow, remember ?

Because there simply aren t enough websites offering exclusive live sessions these days, the resurrected file-sharing giant-- now doing things the legal, boring way-- has stepped to the plate with the (subversively?) redundant series, according to their rawked-out logo.
Boasting exclusive live sessions and/or interviews from luminaries like Papa Roach, Teitur, Rick Ross, Sandi Thom, Default, and Barlowgirl (and okay, the Walkmen, Herbert, Sparks, Akon, Magneta Lane, and Earlimart), the series promises raw, acoustic, intimate music-making, and recently tapped none other than , who shared an offbeat cover and two Cookie Mountain jams with the headphone-wearing cat alien thing.

Unlike their , these aren t the least bit acoustic. TVoTR tackle Dead , floating the quirky yet strangely profound ditty about reincarnation and expired groceries over a warm, fuzzy bed of looped guitars and such, harmonizing and overlapping vocals in a manner that might make a choral director cringe while an indie kid squeals with delight. They also contribute a blandly faithful version of Cookie s Province and an inspired, rough-edged take on Wolf Like Me .

You may download the tracks from $0.99 each or $2.95 for all three-- or stream them whenever you like for free by pimping your e-mail address to Napster.

Just click on the song titles. In other TVOTR news, their video for Wolf Like Me is up for the MTV2 show Subterranean s best videos of the year list. You can vote for it by going on MTV s godawful website and clicking on vote .

Ward Single
M. Ward single??

Fellers, lock up yer women! It s just a big ol boot-stompin hootenanny all the time with these alt-country types, I tell ya. Just look at that character.

Greenhorn s only been around a few years now, and he s already covering Jimmie Dale Gilmore and hooking up with the most respected urban cowboys and cowgals in the game: , (My Morning Jacket), (Giant Sand), (Wilco), and even the of banjo legend Earl Scruggs.
The proof s in the pudding, and the pudding here is a new single Ward has rounded up for release on February 20 via . It collects To Go Home , from this year s quite lovely , an epic cover of Gilmore s Headed for a Fall -- featuring Case (vocals), James (guitar/vocals), Cline (lead guitar), Saddle Creek handyman (pedal steel), and ex-Thermal Jordan Hudson (drums)-- and new jams Human Punching Bag and Cosmopolitan Pap .

The latter showcases Gelb s piano skills and Chris Scruggs lap steel chops. Mogis mixed both of the star-studded selections.
Ward goes to the land down under this winter, where it will be summer, a season more conducive to his six-shootin , rough n tumble ways.

Forgoing all that tribal-y stuff, Ashworth instead intones at us exasperatedly from the left speaker channel over a fuzzy drum machine and some droning synth chords, hits us with a slightly jarring noise breakdown, and effectively swaps the original s bold hues for dour grays. Come to think of it, despairing, chubby Elvis might dance to this, slowly and awkwardly.
This loving cover appears alongside a Xiu Xiu remix of CFtPA s Casiotone for the Painfully Alone in a Yellow Shirt and B-side Sunday Street on the limited edition Graceland 7 , available now.

Only 500 copies exist, so take one home with you today via Chicago s . See, not all indie kids are shy, insular, socially-awkward basement-dwellers. A few of them get out from time to time, even talk to one another, and on exceptionally rare occasions, fall in love.

And then: they make babies. Babies who aren t quite ready yet for Joy Division, or latter-day Scott Walker, or even undiluted Beatles songs.
Fortunately for these lovebirds, new V2 offshoot has just the thing to ease little bundles of joy into the magical mystery world of the Beatles.

It s called All Together Now, and like s significantly less obnoxious step-sibling, non-narcoleptic playmate, or s more straight-and-narrow cousin, the disc takes a kid-friendly approach to some grown-up favorites. In this case, all Beatles songs, as sung by kids-- with a little help from some very special friends.

Jens Lekman, AIH on Ladybug Transistor Covers EP Those indie pop kids, they love to share, and today we find them sharing songs, sharing personnel, and poised to share a brand new EP, that perfect-sized morsel of indie pop goodness. More specifically, Brooklyn-based popsters will hit us with-- no, make that politely pass us-- a four-song covers disc next week, featuring some very special guests.

Here Comes the Rain rings your doorbell on October 31 in all your favorite digital formats. Buy it direct from Merge or any of those other guys on that date, or, if you re lucky/cool enough to live in Europe, scoop it up in tangible CD format on November 1 via Seville, Spain s imprint.
All covers, the four Rain tunes include takes on John Cale ( Empty Bottles ), Trader Horne (title track), Grin ( Everybody s Missing the Sun ), and Kevin Ayers ( Girl on a Swing ).

The Gary Olsen-fronted Ladybug Transitor get by with a little help from their friends on this EP, including s Alicia Vanden Heuvel (who lends vocals to the Trader Horne track), s Kevin Barker (guitar), ans Kellie Sutherland, Gus Franklin, and Isobel Knowles (vocals/horns), / gent Paul Niehaus (pedal steel), and Swede pop posterboy ( additional singing on title track).
Yeah, we done got you all excited about some additional singing , but it s Jens, so deal with it.
The Ladybug Transistor are putting together their latest LP, to see release in early 2007 via Merge.

Catch them live as they rock an afternoon show, or as they infest Europe next month with their tasty pop confections. Haha you Pitchfork jokers, what a hilarious hoax headline. Next, you ll tell me Sufjan Stevens is pregnant!

Like, JK LOL, right dudes? No. Not kidding, and certainly not laughing.

This is 4 SERIOUS, guys. According to a recent report on (yes, that was the sound of a kitten dying) and confirmed by Waits publicist, aesthetically pleasing and indie-savvy film starlet is not only singing, but recording an album of covers.
Scarlett Sings Tom Waits, as it s called, will tentatively see release next spring via recently-revived offshoot Atco.

It s not Scarlett s first vocal foray-- she recorded a version of Gershwin brothers standard for this year s corny Unexpected Dreams: Songs From the Stars charity compilation.
That s pretty much all the info we have right now, but stayed tuned to Pitchfork, your one-stop ScarJo rumor shop, for more details and the latest hot pix. Oh, and according to Fox News Roger Friedman, Waits is one of the premier singer-songwriters in the business.

So, best respect-- because lord knows this is, first and foremost, a business. Luna's Dean Britta Cover Donovan, More on EP Indie rock s sexiest couple? They re certainly in the running.

With officially out to pasture, now have plenty of time to focus on the important things, like being sexy, recording covers, and readying the follow-up to 2003 s lovely L Avventura. Today, October 17, releases a brand new Dean Britta EP, collecting four covers and a track from the forthcoming full length, due January 30.
The Words You Used to Say EP features the title track-- an original Wareham/Phillips composition set to appear on the new record-- and a quartet of covers: Donovan s Colours , Bobby Darin s Distractions, Pt.

1 , folkie Michael Holland s Since I Lay My Burden Down , and yes, Adam Green s We re Not Supposed to Be Lovers .
Wareham has been getting around, co-producing an album by Holland s alter-ego , and playing on a recent record by Australia s . The compilation dropped earlier this year.

This week in People Covering/Interpreting/ Recontextualizing/Maiming we have , four stylin Los Angeles string musicians who have already bowed their way through an album and an EP full of arrangements of tunes by Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the Clash, the Darkness, Jeff Buckley, Iron Maiden, KISS, and more.
This time around, armed with a mere pair of violins, a viola, and a cello, the Section Quartet takes on Radiohead s mighty opus OK Computer in its glorious entirety. It all goes down at two live coastal concerts this month: the first at Los Angeles Spaceland on October 15, and the second at New York City s Merkin Concert Hall on October 19.

The Section Quartet just signed to and recently played the main stage at the . They ve contributed to albums by Christina Aguilera, Kelly Clarkson, James Blunt, A Perfect Circle, and Dokken. You can hear their versions of Radiohead s Just and No Surprises on the 2004 release No Electricity Required.

Half of the current Section Quartet also performed as The Section on the 2001 disc Strung Out on OK Computer: The String Quartet Tribute to Radiohead. That same tribute series also took a stab at the Smiths, the Cure (twice), Tool (twice), Pink Floyd, Nine Inch Nails, and egads, Incubus.
Click below for a ridiculously hokey promo video of the Section Quartet performing bits from a few tunes, including Radiohead s Just and The National Anthem .

If Aphex Twin and Metallica can go symphonic, why not everybody s favorite coed, color-coordinated guitar-and-drums duo ? founder didn t just ponder the possibilities-- he done did it, recruiting British film and television composer and many of the UK s finest young classical musicians (according to a publicist) to record an entire album of orchestral interpretations of White Stripes songs.
Russell and Tablot christened their project , in reference to the Stripes song but with a British spelling to emphasize their place of origin, a good ocean and a half away from Meg and Jack s native Detroit.

Aluminium s self-titled debut arrives (for pre-order) November 6 and features ten Stripes covers, including Aluminum (retaining the original spelling), The Hardest Button to Button , and more.
This ain t your prance-y Mozart shit either. These orchestral renditions have a decidedly modern bent, incorporating plenty of odd percussion, dissonance, and jarring tempos-- particularly the almost-title track.

Listen to a few tunes from Aluminium s album on their .
Aluminium will be available exclusively through the band s , and limited to 3,333 CD and 999 vinyl copies. It features artwork by long-time Stripes designer , and vinyl LPs come with an original Jones silk screen print.

In addition, a special Aluminium toy will be available for purchase on the same date the album arrives. Do you have a news tip for us? Anything crazy happen at a show you attended recently?
