Source: Chase's Calendar of Events, readers Did you know? POCAHONTAS daughter of Powhatan, was born about 1595 near Jamestown, Va. She was the leader of the Indian union of Algonkin nations and helped to foster goodwill between the colonists of the Jamestown settlement and her poeople.
She converted to Christianity, was baptized with the name Rebecca and married John Rolfe on April 5, 1614. In 1616, she accompanied Rolfe on a trip to his native England, where she was regarded as an ambassador. Her stay drew so much attention to the Jamestown settlement that lotteries were held to help support the colony.
