You're too rock 'n' roll, Kate

For once the Kate 'n' Pete roadshow proved too much, even for the rock'n' roll wild men of the NME. Kate Moss and her boyfriend Pete Doherty were thrown out of the magazine's awards show after refusing to desist from what can only be described as overly amorous behaviour. They spent much of their time in passionate embraces instead of taking up their seats at the Hammersmith Palais.

Moss and Doherty were guests of Primal Scream, who were there to receive an award, but rather than sitting to enjoy the live performances from The Killers, Beth Ditto, Jarvis Cocker and The View, the couple spent the first part of the evening drinking, smoking and kissing on a sofa behind the bar. Even the Chinese buffet and free champagne was not enough to keep them at their table. Instead, after a brief return to see Doherty's band Babyshambles lose out to Kasabian as best live band, they retreated to the catering stand backstage to engage in increasingly passionate clinches.

Eventually, the behaviour of the visibly worse-for-wear couple became so blatant and persistent-that security was called to eject them. One source said: "They were caught trying to get into the toilets together and bouncers told them to get back to their table. "Next they were caught in an alleyway out the back.

So the bouncers got Kate and Pete's own security to put them in a car and take them home." Moss was supposed to present Primal Scream with their award but Clash guitarist Mick Jones took her place. Frontman Bobby Gillespie thanked friends and fans during his acceptance speech before adding sarcastically: "Yeah, and thanks to Kate Moss, who was supposed to be here tonight.

" One onlooker said: "It's hard to see why Kate and Pete bothered to turn up. When they were at their table they just seemed to have no interest in what was going on. "They kept disappearing and then popping up out the back or in corners snogging like teenagers at a school disco.

"They obviously took it that step too far. The NMEs is hardly the most well-behaved event so they must have really pushed it for the bouncers to react like that." Moss also managed to annoy The Gossip's singer Beth Ditto, who lost out to her for the sexiest female award.

Ditto said: "People have no common sense. She's not even a musician. Sexy means bullshit mainstream.

" Other winners included Muse, named best British band, and Klaxons, who beat The Kooks and The Fratellis as best new band. Wimbledon-born Jamie T, 20, was the surprise winner of best solo artist, beating heavyweights Jarvis Cocker, Radiohead star Thom Yorke and Lily Allen. Jarvis Cocker, the former Pulp frontman, is to curate the Meltdown festival at the South Bank Centre in June and is promising "high culture and low culture; some very low".

Sir Paul McCartney ended the second day of his divorce hearing today with his customary victory V-sign. The custody battle between him and Heather Mills for their daughter Bea continued at the High Court NME GOSSIP: For once the Kate 'n' Pete roadshow proved too much, even for the rock'n' roll wild men of the NME. But what did it mean to be a teenager in the Fifties, and how has life changed since?
