It s always nice to walk into the office after a long day and a half on the road to read the news you ve been waiting to see forever: Your favorite rock star finally has the street cred he s been lacking.
By now you ve heard the news a hundred times: Former frontman for the popular rock band Phish, Trey Anastasio, third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and DWI - drugs, according to the Whitehall, NY Patrolman that pulled him over.
As our friend Wade pointed out in the aftermath of Trey s arrest, you re not a fucking rock star without a mug shot.
And in today s world, you re no rock star without a . Eat your heart out, George Clinton.
You ve probably gotten e-mails from friends and co-workers.
Maybe your mother called already to find out if you re doing okay, and whether you re also on drugs. You ve been trying to weigh in on with your own snarky remark about how It s gotta be fake because his birthdate is wrong and they found him with the wrong drugs, but the site is down due to the startling news.
But this thing ain t no fake, according to our legit forensic experts who inverted the photo and skewed the contrast, only to conclude that the pic is definitely not Photoshopped.
Although, someone should probably take the time this afternoon to Photoshop Trey s mug shot picture into this shot from Vegoose 2005:
I m sure this wasn t the big announcement most Phish fans had been expecting today, but I m pretty stoked that after two decades we can finally say that a real rock star has been born. Street cred, baby, street cred.

that s my boy!
! The police chief described Anastasio as a very nice guy. but what i really want to know is, what constitutes first and second degree aggravated unlicensed operation?
?? The pill pic, Rob?
Niiice. Any way you can prove it. If not, you re more of a hoax than this whole DUI thing.
And I m no expert, but I believe first and second degree aggravated unlicensed operation can mean he was doing the booty bump with his mom in the passenger seat while the people in the back cringed and wished they never came along for the ride.
Me too, SuperDee, me too. I love that Trey is always friendly no matter who he meets, or in this case, no matter how much shit he s in.
Officer, ya know, I, uh, ya know, I love it here, you guys are awesome! I m still VERY confused about his DOB. Why if it s in April did we all celebrate it in Vegas on Sept 30?
that pic is really sad I havent really bought into the whole happy healthy thing he s been trying to pull off the past year, but its too bad to see him really hit a low point.
In the grand scheme of things, its probably not the biggest deal, but now thats it really out in the open, his life/image will never really be the same.
too bad hope he kind of walks away from everything for a while.
Its not like he s pumping out stellar music anyway. Bar 17 wouldn t make a top 100 of 06 list his life/image will never really be the same.
It s such a shame his squeaky clean image has been shattered.
WCBS 880, the local news station in NYC, ran a small report about Trey s incident. Waste was playing in the background.
Justin you probably don t even listen to Phish.
You can t even criticize Trey for the leaving the band, he had his reasons. Everyone misses Phish, but it was his choice. Stop leaving him a bad rap and do whatever it is you do.
A buddy of mine from Lake George who works in the area Trey got stopped at, knows some of the cops who work that precinct and they told him that, when Trey stepped out of the car, he had half a burrito squashed all over the back of his jeans. LOL. That s true wookie style, baby!
!! I am not suprised by the arrest and what may be found in his urine sample maybe so or maybe not show more than the few drugs most of us have devoured at our on points in life when times were up or maybe down.
At one time though for all of you fuckheads, not fluffheads, this man did make us smile. Today my son of six asked me to play him Tela as we drove down the road after his sisters birthday party and I smiled. I from ear to ear.
To my old redheaded friend on the stage, we still believe. In Christmas, in Gamehendge, in Phish and in Trey. He will get up and shine.
He maybe so or maybe not run like an antelope but without him many of us would not have either. Please be phamily again. God bless.
whats the deal guys? no Rush Limbaugh jokes? Listen up true phan , I totally agree with you and really hope that he makes a turn for the better the same way I did several years ago.
But the truth is that, steppin out of a car with slurred speech while sporting half a burrito squashed all over your jeans and (as I just found out 2hrs ago) globs of beef bean over your neck and shirt is absolutelly roll-on-the-floor-laughing hilarious. Add to that Trey s chill, good natured attitude while dealing with the cops in such a shape and it becomes a true classic for the ages. I met Trey with his daughter down in NYC just before this past tour, and got invited down for the 1st Webster Hall show.
I was pleased with how healthy he looked, especially after seeing some of other photos after Phish broke up. Now I know it was 3am, but this wasn t the guy I saw when we met. We ve all been in spots before, where, if we got stopped by police, we might have looked the same.
Bottom line is though, folks make mistakes, and I hope things go better for him. Clearly, he s not secure in his skin right now. Not to offend though, we have all been there!
Suggestions for Trey: (1) Listen, and I mean REALLY listen to yourself on Brian Robert, I know I did when I was on that same oh so slippery slope you seem to be residing on. Major eye-opener. (2) Find Phil Lesh!
! He can help. Ya sure he liked the drink, but pills, booze, pot, powder, et al, it all takes you to the same dark place.
For a while Phil was closer to Jerry than us. He was spared, and has been renewed, mentally, phyically and most important SPIRITUALLY, and has been touring his 60 something year old ass off and taking names since. Trey need to find that lost spirit of himself.
Take any early show,(for me pre-95) and it stinks of that spirit. Trey needs to find it, and Phil has the map. Doubt this is really news to any of us, is it?
(Holy crap, Trey uses drugs?!?
*yawn*) Many of us have been there, and nobody should really be surprised Trey s there now. While his musical output since Phish has been tepid at best, I m not going to take the opportunity to mock him for getting caught in a situation many of us have dealt with personally. The man s been using drugs for over 20 years, it s bound to happen sooner or later.
Life will go on, and hopefully he ll end up in a better place eventually. As for being a true phan, I m a true fan of the music of Phish, no more, no less. Honoring the beauty of that music doesn t mean blinding myself to the reality of those musicians as human beings.
Anyone remember coventry? Did that sound like a guy who was clean and sober? Big fucking shock, Millionaire musician abuses drugs, that is original and tasty info.
Maybe this will be the wakeup that Trey needs. Something, be it drugs, exhaustion, or any other myriad of issues sapped trey of his ability to compose some of the most outstanding music I have ever listened to. He has become a pathetic shell of what he once was.
Even if Phish never plays another note together I hope for him and selfishly for all of us that he can get level headed and get back to doing what made him great and what made us care, making great music.
PS Do you think that Burritto has been stuck to his ass since the last show? I just can t stop laughing at the Burrito detail of the scene.
I mean it s a classic!! The cops stop you you step out of the car, rocked out of your gourd on Xanax, globs of beef bean on yor shirt and neck and half a Burrito squashed all over your ass?
! LOL!!
I love it! And to be honest, it was bizarre incidents like these that made me get my shit together, straighten up and have a better life. Alright, I am getting a little tired of everyone shitting on Trey s music post Coventry.
Seriously, give the guy a break, he didn t leave phish to start another phish. Shine is poppish, but in an interview he gave, he said the album is basically a letter to phish phans and the songwriting is about being in phish. So I think it s great that he finally got to make a reflective album.
And Bar 17 just flat out rocks! But cheers to Humarock for the brian and robert analogy. I never thought of that but it s true, although I support him in everything he does, I think he should listen to that song and he may find that he was sending a message to himself.
Get the boys back together Trey, at this point it s just the right thing to do! Drugs make music better. Simple as that.
I could rip bill hicks off here, but why really?
What killed Phish is not the drugs, it s old age. Trey is our generations Sting.
Face it, a 35 year old man just can t write a song like Antelope or Reba.
It s the truth folks, it s the truth. Trey created the band I loved to follow.
I think he really needs our support. Who cares if he does drugs, he s still a great musician. You couldn t be any further from the truth, Justin.
Robert Fripp, John McAlughlin ever heard of them and how they just keep getting better with time? Drugs only make music better for tone-deaf wookies and N.A.
-bound guys named Justin. I Love Trey no matter what and if you are a true phan you will too! Cut him some slack, GEEZ.
For so many years phish presented a very educated almost yuppie image from the stage. It just kills me to see it (their image) deteriorating in this way. To me they were the ultimate example of what it means to be free, to be american.
they were the essence of what we have here that no other country has or will ever have. You can hate phish out of taste or ideology but there is no denying the utter brilliance of what they did. The numbers prove it.
At this point they are still the last true rock band. So the guy screwed up and it s all over the internet. I just hope it doesn t get any worse.
Incidentally, what s with the suspended license? The guy has millions and he couldn t at least get someone to take care of it? weird Trey Anastasio Busted!
| Pleades Not Guilty
I realize this is probably old news to many by now, but there s been a few updates to the Trey Anastasio arrested post we did detailing his pain-pill induced DWI charge in upstate New York. When I first read the I love Trey and his music, it s true his music isn t the same without Phish. I have attended over 40 Phish shows, most pre-hiatus and 4 of his solo shows, and the vibe wasn t the same without Mike, Page and Jon, but his music still makes me smile.
I hope for the sake of himself and his family Trey cleans up, and if that means a break from music, so be it. This guy deserves one after all he has put in. I hope Phish comes back, but I now know that it may never happen.
Some people just can t be on the road in a band without getting into the bad shit, and I hope whatever decision Trey makes, it is in favor of his good health. We all don t want him to go the route of Jimi, Janis, Jim Morrison, Keith Moon, Jerry, etc. and end his life prematurely.
you guys suck, i cant believe you wrote that shit you hippy scum. Man, you guys are pathetic. Stop sucking and biting treys balls.
..
..had a total blast.
Jesus, was that really 2 years ago? wow..
. oh,..
.
I remember hearing he had 4 F’s and...
..
They did a cover of...
I hope they do that again this year. I totally took a day off..
